I noticed on Sunday that Rufio's left eye is kind of weepy. Not super watery or a bunch of stuff coming out of it, only a little bit and it isn't continuous. I've been keeping an eye on him and his behavior. So far he is acting totally normal and happy. Nothing is out of the ordinary. Today I did notice that he's been sneezing. Probably 5 or 6 sneezes today. Do guinea pigs have allergies (possible silly question)? Or is he getting a cold?

Here's a picture to show what his eye looks like.

It's only that one eye and it doesn't look like that all day long. It comes and goes. But this has been going on for a few days now and he's sneezing today so I'm getting worried. He doesn't sneeze all the time or consecutively. Like I said about 5 or 6 throughout the whole day. I must confess though, guinea pig sneezes are very cute. Hopefully not harmful.

Do I need to worry yet? He's eating like...well...a pig as usual, drinking same amount, munching on hay, eating his veggies and pellets, being his normal poop machine, and sleeping his regular amount.

Thanks!

I would make an appointment at the vet just to have it checked over.

It could need attention or it could just be fluid they emit from the bottom of their eye which is used as a cleaning fluid when they're cleaning themselves. You notice this a lot when you put them out on grass in the garden especially when it's sunny. Someone else may be able to add more.

I agree he needs checking over as watery eyes and sneezing can be a sign of a URI which would need antibiotics. Like Stewybus says though it could be the cleaning fluid, however as he is sneezing aswell I agree that a vet check is needed. They can get allergies and I know of a vet that recently agreed to try Children's Piriton so you may want to ask your vet about this if he thinks it is allergy related.

I was able to get him in to see the vet last night. Turns out he has an URI. I was given some antibiotics and eye drops for the poor little guy. Glad I went and was able to get him into the vet so soon. Thanks for the help!

I hope that he recovers quickly as you seem to have caught it early on.

That's really good. Best to weigh him daily while he's ill. If he starts to lose weight or lose appetite you may need to use probiotics to stimulate his gut. As long as weight is pretty stable then nothing too much to worry about.
