8:) I will keep stuff about my pigs in this one topic in future, makes it easier for everyone to keep track.

When I was 4, my dad brought home a few pigs from his job, pigs nobody wanted at his school. That's how a tradition to rescue pigs was started. Dad loved pigs and it crossed over instantly to me. I do not remember much of the pigs when I was young, as they lived outdoors and due to lack of vets who cared, died fast too. My dad was a farm boy and he was able to manage their health as best as he could.

In 1986, I brought my first piggie indoors. People said that I would bring disease indoors, etc and called my poor Wheeter vermin. Due to decent info, I read a book which falsely instructed me to make him live alone. Luckily, after supervision, he lived his life with the cats, who loved him as a kitten. The petsitter let a dog play with him and he got killed at the age of 8, poor pig! My ex was angry because I cried and forbid me to get another pig, as he hated them anyway. Needless to say it was part of the reason I left him soon after and divorced him.

Lucky me, current hub adores piggies! He can't go through a toy store without looking for something for the pigs!

I have had lots of piggies and fell in love with their own special character. We currently only have 2, but will have 4 again in the distant future, as current plans means we'd better limit the amount of pigs. Can't disclose about the plans just yet ;)

Still, over 40 years later since I had pigs, the amount of decent vets is extremely low in our country and the way they care about pigs is still not up to the standard it should have to be, like many of you take for granted. I had to learn about health as much as possible myself, although I am against self medicating and diagnosing completely, it is a necesstity living in Belgium to make pigs survive. :...

So, this is my pigs's cage. It's almost 4 meters / 13 feet long and 0.8m / 2.3 foot wide. It has served for up to 5 pigs in the past:

Currently 2 inhabitants. Woozy is almost 4, a tricolor Rex (cream - buff - chocolate). She’s sweet, but scared of her own shadow at times. I think she came from a place where she got scared heavily, her twin sister was like that too.

And last but not least: Plucky! A cute kisser and far too smart for her own good, lol! She’s almost 3 and she’s a light gray Rex. She's currently recovering from her surgery for ovarian cysts, which unfortunately her twin sister Bubbly didn't survive (bad reaction to painkiller).

How cute are your piggies x) Woozy is just stunning drool I am going to be looking out for this little one a lot. Stories & photo's is my favourite section on the forum, so don't mind me if I stalk your piggies :))

I agree with piggyfan your cage is amazing. Do you keep their stuff in the draws underneath? Thanks for sharing your piggies with us.

As always, your big cage and your ever changing cage decoration is fascinating! @)

I adore Woozy (but then I love anything that is ginger and white) and caring Plucky. Your rexes are such big, gentle piggies that I hope a rex will come my way some day... x)

Very sorry about Bubbly! 8... We have a Rainbow Pets section if you want to pay tribute to your RIP piggies.

Wow! Woozy & Plucky are 2 beautiful girls.

Your pigs are lovely and that's omne amazing cage, welcome to the forum.

Hi,

Being a fan of minis I love their toy.

Do they sleep in them?

What a long length to popcorn in, it's great.

Hi, I think you already know my piggys (Charlie and Kenny) from Facebook! Welcome to the forum (:

Welcome to the Forum, Love your set-up... :))

Thanks everyone!

Forgot to add that Woozy is also on, what I call, “borrowed time”. She has a birth defect, a kidney dysfunction, and I managed to keep her alive due to a very low calcium diet. If anyone would like to read the entire story, it’s here:

Rex can be fairly big indeed, Plucky is rather small for a Rex, but Woozy is a good size Rex.

Do you keep their stuff in the draws underneath?
The pigs invaded my small home! At one point, they took over 8 of those entire drawer cabinets and 2 big ones. Now “only” 6, lol.

We have a Rainbow Pets section if you want to pay tribute to your RIP piggies.
Thanks, but I prefer to celebrate pig’s lives here only. Memorials are so sad and having them with us is such a joy, even if they don’t live as long as we hoped. Bubbly used to stand guard over me each time I was ill, only left for a quick bite. Will never forget my lovely nurse. <3

Being a fan of minis I love their toy. Do they sleep in them?
Oh, yes! They have many revamped toy cars and they love each and every one of them! In fact, they are my favorite items for the pigs. Being a fan of cars myself, I can’t afford to drive the cars myself, so I buy them for the pigs. :P

Thanks everyone!

I don’t have pics of my pigs before 1986. Then I got my free roamer Wheeter. He was incredibly tiny as a pig, loved to swim and the cats adored him.

In 2004, we got Floopy, a beige Rex. Hub was so smitten and she loved him to bits, his heart broke when she died. She was extremely intelligent and understood 48 commands and sentences!

Her cage mate was Kooky, a US Teddy. Now, she was quite the character! Oh my! Feisty doesn’t cover it, rofl! She loved me to pieces. She could also run an entire cage length backwards, meaning well over 10 feet!

The both of them inspired me to start making the Cavy Comics weekly since 2004. Many items that really happened are used in the comics.

After Kooky, we only had Rex so far. Bibi joined the group and was hub’s girl too. She had a great mother instinct for all the pigs which joined after.

Druppy was added to the group. She understood how to make us laugh and did it on purpose! She used to kiss me when I bend over in the cage. She also fed me parsley once at lap time, she hopped up to put a piece in my mouth!

When Druppy died, we added the twins Whoopy and Woozy. Very sweet, but scared easily.

When Bibi and Whoopy went over the rainbow bridge, we added the twins Bubbly and Plucky. Both very smart!

You have had some very gorgeous girls and big pigsonalities that have blossomed with your wonderful care! I met you when still had Kooky and Bibi.

What a cool cage! I have never seen a rex around here. It would be nice to someday have one :)

Plucky has recovered well after ovarian cysts surgery, but not as should be, plus it took very long to see her look better. I did a very detailed checkup Monday.

Minuscule necrosis at the ear rims barely visible, I had to take off my glasses to see it. Continuous weight loss if I don't add one hand feeding a day despite that she eats well, she lost 150 grams in 3 weeks after surgery. Weight loss after surgery is normal, but she steadily loses a few grams per day. Less personal hygiene, slight pale blue gums, preference to eat oat hay, which is less fibrous and costs less effort to chew. The rest was fine, I checked her teeth with my otoscope, so I could only conclude that she has minor heart issues and that I caught it in time.

Emergency trip to the vet was planned. There is only one vet in Belgium who does heart scans, but she's on holidays for weeks, she was advised by the vet. The vet took blood instead then. He checked her all over and agreed I was probably right. I called for the results, but the amount of blood wasn't sufficient to determine heart issues. The vet believes me though and hub had to pick up very mild heart medication this morning before going to his job. I have to see for a few weeks what it gives and evaluation will follow.

I will keep her on one extra hand feeding session a day too. If the meds work, the hand feeding should also add weight again, which she can use.

Hub just informed me that the medication is Prilactone. This is what I found online: The active substance in Prilactone, spironolactone, blocks the actions of a hormone called aldosterone in the kidneys, heart and blood vessels. By blocking aldosterone, spironolactone causes the kidneys to excrete salt and fluids, but retain potassium, and hence it improves heart function.

It's supposed to have possible reasonable side-effects, which is cool. It can cause skin irritation, for example, so I need to see if it doesn't spill. If it does, I need to rinse the spot on Plucky. Washing hands after handling it is advised.

Good that you have caught it in time! I hope that the new meds will help Plucky to pick up weight again and have a good life!

The heart meds work well! Improvement on all fronts. We have a well active and happy pig again! She slowly gaining weight too, but I'm still feeding her a teaspoon of Critical Care a day extra.

Amazing! You have put in alot of time and love for all your piggies BIG and small. I commend you for all of the caring and nurturing and sacrifices you have made for your piggies. GREAT JOB!

Wow! what a fabulous cage! Do you mind if I copy some elements of it for my piggies? I am desperate for them to have more space and never thought of anything like that. Happy piggies

My YouTube channel is up for ideas to inspire people, so go ahead, Ben and Jerry!

Plucky is without extra Critical Care and gains weight well on her own. I saw a popcorning frenzy, she really feels well!

Woozy had an occasional bum shake, which I thought was weird. So, I took her to the vet. Vets here don't look into details, but the vet already knows that I'm not his average customer, lol. He's specialized in piggies, a miracle in our country.

First some history about Woozy: her sister and her suffer/suffered from a genetic kidney disorder. We were too late to save her sister, but had to drive 6 hours to go to a university vet to get help, he put the pigs on a very low calcium diet, which I kept strictly since November 2011.

I gave her supposedly new local low calcium food a few months ago. I spotted gritty pee for days and stopped the food. The calcium amount wasn't on the wrapper and I didn't believe what the company had told the vets. Shortly after, she had a mini stroke and one of the causes can be excess calcium. She also had 2 minor bladder stones from that food, which she peed out without any probs. I felt them. She developed a bladder infection at that time too.

The weird occasional hopping butt shake that she did went on since then. Turns out she had a mini stone left and the start of a UTI. The vet put her on Valium, Metacam, Cisapride, Marbocyl, Infacol, so she would be able to pee it out and that her bladder can heal, as the stone is irregularly shaped. Let's hope it works. Checkup next week.

The local vet says it's a miracle with her kidney issues that she's still alive and well, regarding. Glad to hear that my gut told me not to dismiss her occasional behavior as stress, as she is a scaredy cat.

Just when I thought Woozy's UTI went from benign on Monday to evil yesterday, today suddenly huge improvement. She's finally dry and not stinky anymore. Checkup will be on Monday. The vet said that Marbocyl takes 5 days to kick in, I guess it did then? We will see.

Enjoy the latest vid. It still has Bubbly in it, will have a few of those over the next months.
