Hi,

Really sad today. One of our piglets (Hiro) has passed away this morning, the older one (Gill) is still going strong, alone again naturally.

Both were males. We are unsure what to do to keep him happy, so would like some advice.

Does Gill need a new house buddy or not? He was a rescue and lived alone for about 8 months after he came to live with us. He was pretty happy to be fair, but we got him a buddy to keep him company (like all animals need really). Gill is 6yrs minimum, I'm not sure he has the get up and go for a baby pig, he's a very quiet man and let Hiro dominate him no end, but at bath time, when they were separated for example, they both got very noisy and anxious.

Do you think he needs a buddy? And if so does he need a baby or an older one? Male or female?

Thank you.

Sleep well little Hiro.

Welcome to the forum, sorry it is in such sad circumstances. I am so sorry to hear you have lost your piggie this morning.

Here is a link to a thread on how you can help a bereaved piggie https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/looking-after-a-bereaved-piggy.109674/

Some piggies cope on there own better than others. So please be sure to look out that Gill is still eating and Pooing and give him lots of extra attention, which I am sure you are already.

Are you from the UK or US. We have a UK recommended rescue locator here and many rescues offer piggie dating so they could help you find Gill a new friend https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/pages/guinea-pig-rescue-locator/

Once again very sorry for your loss, we have a Rainbow Bridge section here should you wish to leave a memorial thread to Hiro https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/forums/rainbow-bridge-pets.16/

RIP Hiro

i would say he would benefit from a friend but would understand if you didnt want to embark on another one.

Thank you the link helped, we found we have a really good rescue center close by that do some guinea pig "dating" so we'll give them a call and see if they can help and hopefully we can find another chap or chapette to keep him company x

I'm really sorry for your loss! Piggies are usually happier with a friend, but I can see the quandary in adopting a young pig as a companion to a 6-year-old pig. Hopefully the rescue 'dating service' will find him a good match!
