Hello people

since my scare with davids eye i dont want to keep putting big balls of hay in the cage as david runs in it and tends to hide in it. I have always put the hay rack in and noticed they dont really use it (craig does a little). I tried them with it last night and didnt put any hay down, however, when iv come down this morning they havent used it. Iv put some near their food bowl on the floor and they are eating that but david just starts jumping through it.

Is there any hints of tips that i can do to make them use the hayrack or is there another way of giving them their hay so they arent running around in it :))

You could make a hay sock and hang it up. Cut the toe out of a nice sock, and tie string around the top. Hang it from the top of cage, or hutch bars, and stuff with hay. Piggies love to reach up and pull the hay out. xx

Scout around and see if you can find softer hay, perhaps? I does sound like he loves his hay :). Lots of piggies on here have hay to hide in all the time and don't get eye pokes, maybe it was just a freak accident? Hayracks have been linked to freak accidents too, like injured teeth or legs getting caught. I'm not saying you shouldn't use it, a lot of people do and their pigs are fine, just like with hay piles, only that it may not be the answer to all your dreams. Like with everything else piggy wise there's no optimal way, just choices to be made...

Another way would be to use a different kind of rack, more on his level, like a utensil "thingy" for drying cutlery that can sit on the cage floor (with maybe a ziptie or something to keep it from tipping over...)

I stuff old toilet rolls with hay and cut holes into the sides - my girls love playing with them and trying to get into the hay, plus they are left with the cardboard tube to play with.
