I have today found a couple of patches of pink on my piggies' bed. I smelled it and it smelt of urine. I have two piggies in the cage so I am trying to determine which one it is by separating them. They both appear to be acting normally. I fed them tomato for the first time yesterday and they also had strawberries yesterday (although not for the first time) so I didn't know whether this would have had anything to do with it. They are both females. Any advice would be gratefully received. Thank you.

Hi! Some veg can stain the urine, so I wouldn't panic just yet. if your urine stains are evenly coloured with a rim in the same colour, it is most likely just discoloured urine.

Blood in urine appears mostly as reddish drops in the middle of a normal coloured urine patch or as a reddish rim depending on the amount of blood in the urine.

Keep an eye on the situation and if in doubt or if you are very worried, have the urine tested for blood.

Ah thank you very much for that. They are evenly coloured stains. I shall continue to keep an eye on things. Thanks again x

Agree with Wiebke. Best to keep an eye out to be sure. If you are concerned a good way to test is to feed piggie some very wet veg or if you are confident syringe some water slowly to them (wet veg does the trick often) then pop them in a tupperware and wait for nature to take its course. Hopefully it is nothing to worry about.

One of my boys had stained looking urine and I took him to the vets . They said it is normal for guineas to have such staining due to diet but in his case they felt a lump near the opening . They tried treating him but he went down hill fast and the staining became redder :( and we eventually had to have him pts . I'd take your wee one to the vet to make sure . Sorry my advice is all doom and gloom - I'm sure your wee guinea is in th normal bracket x

Hi there properly nothing at all to worry about but with Guinea pigs you can never be too careful,

Urine Test Sticks will take the guesswork out of it

http://compare.ebay.co.uk/like/3904...ff11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=66&ff19=0

I use these to test my pigs routinely

not only do they tell you if it is blood they also give you any indication of many other problems that could be looming,

They may look a bit daunting at first but they are so we easy to interpret, particularly the blood one, you simply dip the stick in the Wee and the pad that is there to test blood, will either change green, or show green speckles on it, and for under £10 you could save a fortune on vets bills

NB if anything does show up out of the ordinary veterinary advice is always advised

Wow....I wonder if they have these tester sticks here in the US. maybe on AMAZON. But anyway....that's a gr8. idea

Hi there I believe you can get them in America if I'm not mistaken, a good friend of mine lives in California got some recently, if you have any problems PM me an I will find out where she got them from.

There are various Brands with various levels of tests that can be performed. The less tests are usually the cheaper ,

but don't go too cheap As long as you get a box that has the following, you will be able to analyse several of the common piggie complaints, including Diabetes(glucose test.) A thing that vets didn't seem to consider in the past, But Recently noticing Quite a few pigs seem to be suffering from this, !

Blood
Leukocytes
nitrate
Protine
Glucose
Ketone

He is a photo of a pig who had trace amounts of blood (pad with green specks) but no infection was present so vet suggested increasing fluid intake (two or three 1-2 inch size portion of cucumber throughout the day)

This flushed any gravel out of the bladder and cleared up the blood within a week, but every case is different, there are pads on a test stick that will tell you whether there is an infection in which case the appropriate antibiotics may be necessary

Beetroot is another one that really makes the urine red! I hope it is just the food, sometimes when it's an infection, one can smell the difference.

good idea gizzy, will have to get some test strips in for my girls and test them on a regular basis...although getting a wee sample could be interesting haha :P
