Hi there,
My little Pip has lost an amount of fur around her middle. So far the vet has given her a course of injections for mites, which didn't make any difference. He doesn't seem to know what else to do, so now he's just given us a spot-on treatment for mites. Personally I'm thinking maybe it's not mites!
It's not scabby, or flaky, she doesn't seem itchy. Her companion, Mouse, doesn't show any signs of losing fur either. Pip is also getting on, she's about four and a half now.
Has anyone else experienced this problem before and have a suggestion about what might be wrong?

No, there is absolutely no chance that she's pregnant.
She is four and a half years old, so she's an old lady now.

Ovarian cysts are a common problem in older sows and can cause hair loss. The hair loss is usually on their sides and is symmetrical. Other symptoms include acting hormonally (mounting etc) and a change in shape so that they're skinnier on the shoulders and chubbier round the belly.

It may be a fungal problem ? ?
Have you changed her bedding recently ?
What bedding is she housed on ?

She has been missing her fur for weeks now, as the vet has treated her for mites with a series of injections and is now starting on drops. It hasn't got any worse, but ithasn't got any better either - which is why I'm thinking that maybe it is ovarian cysts. I've been keeping the hutch even cleaner than usual, and nothing has changed in that area - she has always had sawdust and hay for the past four years. It's just going to be hard going back to a vet to say that I don't agree with his treatment!
