Please can anyone clarify the difference between recovery feed.....and recovery feed plus.what do most of you use out of these two.

My vet recommends the plus, it's got extra vit C and more of the healing boosting additives (can't remember what their called!). As the plus is more expensive I tend to start with it and then go to the not plus, then if it's just to get extra food in while piggie is recovering and not eating for it's self I mush pellets. I do tend to play things buy ear depending on why I'm syringe feeding and how bad the illness is. The cheapest place I've found it is vetuk.

If I remember correctly from when I bought some of the SS recovery plus for Zebedee (2.5 years ago now), the main additional ingredient other than vitamin c is yeast (saccharomyces cerevisiae) as a probiotic I think.
[ I'm not sure if I gave any to Zeb in the end, as his gassy tummy problem seemed to be caused by yeast overgrowth, so it didn't make sense to me to add to it. ]

Just looked the ingredients up and jogged my memory of what the vet said. The plain one's main ingredient is alfalfa the plus is timothy hay, the first is better for rabbits the second for piggies. The alfalfa in the normal is why she prefers the plus one for guinea pigs. I think overall the plus is a better product all round for guinea pigs.

My piggies must be a bit weird then - they love Critical Care and are not at all fond of recovery food.
Does it matter which one we give a piggy who needs syringe feeding?

When a piggy needs syringe feeding I feel it's best to give it what it likes, if you can get it to eat without a fight you and piggy will both be happier for it. If you are only feeding for a couple of days then it matters less but if like me (too many times ) you're having to top up for weeks then me giving mine a feed based on alfalfa (not recommended for piggies) wasn't the smartest move. Last time I fed Peanut he got mushed pellets as a top up for a few weeks when the packet food I already had ran out, it did the job, kept him going, was a lot cheaper and he's still here!
