Hi!

What antifungal treatment have you been given and which country are you in?
How many rounds of ivermectin has your piggy had? How long are you waiting between the various skin treatments?

New piggy problems: URI - ringworm - skin parasites

Yes uk. She thought it was mites. Yes he’s got painkillers.

What treatment have they been prescribed please?

Poor piggy.. that looks so sore... I hope you get it sorted soon xx

Oh my goodness that looks very sore! Yes please tell us how bad this was when you saw the vet, how long since you saw the vet, and exactly what treatments you have given, then we can better advise... poor piggy!

Itraconazole and malaseb shampoo once weekly. 3 x rounds of invermectin.

Is little bolt on metacam? Do you have another check up booked to see how they are doing? How long has it been since they went to the vet?

Coming up for 3rd week but this last few days it has got worse. I have separated him from Mr Pickles because I thought he might be biting him but that can’t be the case now. I’ve changed his snowflake bedding and meadow hay thinking he might be allergic but nothing is working

I would say this is possibly fungal and mites possibly has the vet tested for fungal, they appear to be treating for both.

are they an exotic vet or guinea pig specialist?

Yes he’s on metacam. He’s booked in tomorrow but I haven’t much faith because up to now nothing is working. The hair sample showed no sign of mites

No she isn’t an exotic vet. He has an appointment tomorrow but might ring to see if he can be seen by an exotic vet instead

The key thing is finding a vet with guinea pig experience not all exotics do have the experience so finding one experienced with piggies is key

The itraconazole is that an oral medication? I am tagging in @Abi_nurse also

I would get your boy seen by a specialist vet very soon, but if you cant get one straight away I would go see the other vet tomorrow. Usually a vet would want to see a piggy back for a check up a week or 10 days after prescribing for a skin condition, or sooner if things got worse. If this is mange mites they may well not show on a hair sample as they live in the skin, a skin scrape would be needed. Can we ask what mite treatment you were prescribed, at what dose and strength? And what is your piggies weight? Was it Xeno 50, Xeno 450, or something else? Has your boy had 2 doses now, if you saw the vet 3 weeks ago? The doses are usually 2 weeks apart... hopefully @Abi_nurse can help!

It sounds like the vet is covering all bases comprehensively as abi says maybe suggest to vet imaverol topically Instead of masaleb shampoo.

I would consider trying imavarol for this, with the level of sore also I would be considering using antibiotics as there is a potential for a secondary bacterial skin infection in a case like this.

x
Ok. I’ll take note of this when I go to the vets. Thank you

Gosh that looks sore.you have been given excellent advice seeing another guinea pig savvy vet maybe helpful.sending you and your piggie a hug.i hope you can get to the bottom of this.x

There's some excellent advice on here & it looks like he's being treated for mites & fungal.

At the beginning of the year my girls had firstly fungal & when I thought I'd just about got shot of that, then they got mites (due to a lowered immune system with the fungal stress I think).

But Tiggy had a nasty, large (approx. 2x 50p pieces next to each other), cracked, partly raw patch on her back, the vet suggested Sudocream & this helped but it didn't seem to soak in very well & she would jump when I applied it :(

I did get some F10 antiseptic, barrier cream for her, which seemed to suit her better than the Sudocream. It was soothing & absorbed quicker too. Only a thin smearing was needed. Ask the vet if it's ok to use with her other current treatments.

F10 Products Germicidal Barrier Ointment

I was using Maleseb for the girls & I think it dried out their skin quite a bit, which didn't help in that respect.

With ringworm & mites the symptoms usually get worse before they get better, it's just a shame you're poor piggy has a double whammy of them

Make sure you ask the vet to prescribe the maximum safe dose of painkillers & split evenly into 2 during the day (eg, 8am & 8pm) to keep a constant supply of painkillers going through his system.
If your guineas in pain this could affect his appetite and cause other problems :(

Good luck finding a decent cavy savvy vet & keep us updated.
Big hug for you too as it's all very stressful seeing them like this
Xx

I know it probably sounds like an echo but I would really seek out a knowledgeable guinea pig vet. I use a generalist vet who is very good with piggies but the best thing about them is they don't hesitate to refer on when they feel it's outside their expertise. I think if I turned up with a case like this where it's an advanced condition they would refer me straight on. Fingers crossed you are able to get on top of this
