please could you help me

Hi, my name is sarah jane and I'm a regular on the Rabbit Rehome Forum, i run a holiday boarding service, but unfortunatly one of the holiday guinea pigs passed away this morning. Yesterday i noticed he seemed a little quiet, so i called his owners etc to let them know, unfortnatly they didnt pick up but i left a voicemail explainging i was concerned. I then went outside and he was running around the run and he nibbled at some food, so i thought i was just being over cautious. (very much like me)

So i cleaned him out, gave him some cuddles and then popped him back. He seemed fine again. This morning i woke up to find he had left us during the night. I am very upset to say the least because when a pet stays here...they become part of the family until their owners arrive to take them home.

But what concerns me...is his owner told me they had two, and his friend died a week ago. she said that she checked him. and he didnt seem 'quite right', bit quiet etc but bcus his general behaviour seemed fine, she made an appointment 4 the vet the next day to be on the safe side. he died a few hours later.

I have cleaned out his hutch and remved it from the boarding area to be on the safe side, but i guess what i want to know is, is there anything contagious that could have been passed onto him from his other friend? Is there a risk to my other boarders?

I have never expericned anything like this, i have lots of guinea pig books and care information etc and nothing seems to add up. I'm hoping maybe someone can shed some light? thank you for listening

Aw... poor leo =( i think he is too upset abt losing his fren.. i heard from people that if 2 piggies are staying together for long.. and 1 of it went to strawberrie land... another one would be sooo upset becos of his/her partner's death and got depression..

i think u already did what u could~ *paT paT*

I'm just concerned that if he had something contagious that it would spread to my other holiday boarders, but he didnt show any symptoms, no sickness, he just seemed...almost depressed i guess. i have books and information of guinea pigs etc, but is there any dieases etc that can be spread? no guinea pigs have shared the runsm they r all seperate hutches and runs.

poor leo. i just feel so sad that his family couldnt say goodbye, popcorn free sweet boy on the rainbow bridge :(:(:(:(
 
I'm sorry tt i can't help as i didnt know whether diseases will spread or not. the only thing i know will spread is mites and infection..
maybe other forumers will be able to help you. however if u are saying they are in separate hutches/runs.. i guess should be alrite. if u are worried.. u can go spray disinfectant and leave it to dry so it can effectively kill any bacteria/germs. thats what i did after mocha's death..

I guess his departure is muchly due to depression.. i still remember tt time when Mocha is dead.. Sugar bited my boyfriend;s finger so hard that it bleed.. becos he is so angree and upset. =(
 
i would get the marigolds on and bleach and scrub the hutch ust as a precaution it might be a bacterial or virial infection. or as Skydreamie said just a broken heart where they old guineas? it might just be that age took over and guneas also can suddenly collapse i lost Teddy suddenly he waas about 3 or 4 years old but his friend is fine

I would definately scrub the hutch out and quarantine any areas of grass he was on as a precaution I can appreciate when you have a lot of animals in your care and you have to be very careful with infectious diseases. It could have been for many reasons viral/bacterial/pining but as his hutch mate passed away suddenly too it pays to be cautious.
How long was he with you? As he did not have direct contact with any other animals the risk of anything spreading is greatly reduced you did the right thing removing the hutch.
Without a post mortem it may not be possible to find out what the cause of Leos passing was.

hes only been with me since thursday, he was booked in until april the 14th. He did seem old, she didnt put his age on the form, but he did seem old, he didnt run away like the other piggies do, like run about madly wheeking, he just sort of plodded along. We have removed the hutch and put it in the shed, and i am going to use hutch spray and disinfectant on every other hutch today as a precaution. I just feel so awful, i know i couldnt have done anything but i have to tell someone ive lost their pet :(:(

I am feel more sorry for you, as it must be hard having to look after someone elses pet and this happening. I really hope your ok? I do find it strange though that they never put the age on the form, i would have done so. I would get scrubbing the cage to be on the safe side. Really hope your ok? xx
 
So sorry to hear this, it would be one of my main worries if I was running a boarding place. You did all you could and hopefully the owner is understanding about it. I would personally scrub the hutch out just in case but hope it isn't contagious.
 
Hi Sarah Jane, I was so very sorry to read your news. I agree with Ron and the others, I would definitely bleach the hutch and run that this little piggy used and keep all other residents away from any grassy areas he may have been on. Did his owners leave any instructions as to what you should do with this little chap in the event that he did pass away? Perhaps your local vet would pop him in their mortuary if his owners are away for another couple of weeks?

I also run a small pet boarding hotel and we have only ever lost one hammy :'(. He was a very elderly regular visitor and whilst it wasn't a shock it was still heartbreaking. My girls and I sat with him to the end and placed him in a little box with fleece ready to be collected by his owners. We also scrubbed his accommodation so they weren't faced with having to do that on their return. I have to say my owners were lovely, obviously very upset, but I think they really appreciated that we made Museli's last hours as comfortable as we could.

At least is sounds as if this little chap passed painlessly, having enjoyed a run out on the grass etc. during the daytime. Like you I am over cautious too, but I think you did everything you could, unfortunately these things happen.
 
all the cages are now cleaned out and everything he used is being disinfected.

Ive called his family just waiting for a call back. They live 2 minutes walk from me so i have told them i can take himh ome and bury him for them if would like me too.
