My 10 month old boar Baby is a very weak piggie in general, he was born from one of the girls from a large rescue (Lymington) and his brother was born with no eyes and died at the age of 5 weeks. He is very obviously inbred he's blind and his back legs are almost fused together so he hops rather than walks.

Today, i've just gone into feed them and his chin is very wet and he smells funny. He's drinking loads and seems very restless, he runs around his cage, runs to the water bottle, drinks as if he's never had water in his life, shakes his hair and runs around again. He has been doing this repeatedly since i went in. He had a bit of a stringy poo but other than that he is active and his eyes are bright so i dont know whats wrong. His chest sounds fine and his breathing isnt wheezy. Does anyone know whats wrong? I'm really worried, hes so small and vulnerable :(

I've just had a look on guinea lynx and maloclussion came up. I've never considered it could be teeth related but his jaw does seem a bit misalligned, he is quite skinny but he always has been. Should i try syringe feed him? I think I'm out of critical care, would purified veg be okay?

i really hope someone knowledgable comes along soon when my piggy had bad teeth his chin was wet and it was foul smelling, if he hasnt eaten i think if you dont have critical care you can use pellets of normal food and soak them into a mush but not sure when to start syringing it into him. Sorry hope your piggy gets better real soon.

Oh hun, he sounds such a sweet little mite - how wonderful you took him in and care for him. I have tears in my eyes reading your story of him and his baby brother :(
In all honesty, I would contact Suzygpr for expert advice on the little fella.
Sending hugs and healing vibes, hope he feels better soon x>>

Try him with anything he will eat to keep his gut moving too - when did he last eat ?

I really can't offer any advice but wanted to say I hope he gets better. Poor thing, I wish people would think before they breed so inbreeding wouldn't happen.

i agree with guinea pig slave suzygp will help she is very knowledgable on the dental front.

Thank you everyone, he is eating A bit and seems fine in himself, I'll try and get an appointment at the vets tomorrow with the guinea pig specialist. He is a lovely sweet piggie and is devoted to Edward his cagemate. It annoys me that someone let all these animals get into this state then just offload them all and not think about the consequences they've caused. He is our miracle baby as he was about 40g when he was born and we didn't expect him to live very long but he did and is always very happy and chatty and LOUD! :))

Oh poor little baby. He has done so well to last this long. I really hope he gets better soon.

Fingers crossed your vet can sort him out and he will be better soon x

Hi

Just in case you haven;t managed to get through to Suzy tonight...it does sound from the description that your little lad has a dental problem, probably as a result of his breeding. In view of the fact he has stringy poos, is drinking loads and dribbling then he probably hasn;t been able to eat properly for a couple of days at least and his guts are beginning to stop moving. Please try and feed him some mushed up pellets tonight...20-30ml on one sitting ...otherwise he will be so much the worse when you see the vet tomorrow.

Toorrow he will probably need a gut motility drug from the vet and (providing he is strong enough) an examination of his teeth - particularly his back teeth. (possibly by Xray). Piggies often have a lot of food in their mouths so see if you can get him to eat some cucumber without the skin on before visiting the vet as it can sometimes help clean their mouths out.

You need to prepare yourself for syringe feeding 20-30ml of either mushed pellets, Oxbow criticalcare or Science supreme recovery every 3-4 hours (day and night) until he is better able to eat for himself.

Might also be worth contacting Furryfriends (and her vet for a second opinion if necessary) as she has a lot of experience of dealing with dental piggies.

Sorry I wasn't available last night. Pebble has told you everything that I would've said. Furryfriends is more experienced than I am with dental pigs so worth contacting for any advice regarding treatment.

Best of luck, fingers crossed for you and your piggy.
