I thought they could have eggs - or dog food

there is one species of snake that only eats eggs

as for meat some shops do sell snake steaks to feed snakes on but it is minced up mice and put into a skin like sausage :o

If I was a snake owner I would use that-if you think about it its absolutey no different to us eating mince in shepherds pie or something
Or eating sausages
As for the frozen piggies, I am completely against them being sold on Ebay but when they are bought in shops its just like us eating frozen fish except with guinea pigs
I know we all love them but not all piggies are pets.

I reported it too but still on there. I guess ebay think its ok :( It is the pic that annoys me, takes the p**s.

Welll i came back from uni and was ad as they said they normally keep dead guinea pigs and everything i nthe freezer :-\ But i think there used for other animals to eat or disecting or something but its only after they die they do it :( The man showed us a dead frozen chicken, pinkies and blood worms ?

Surely there must be enough by-products from the meat industry (I am a vegetarian) which would be a far cheaper source (the only argument which ever seems to gain any ground in this day and age :()

I suspect that most by-products from the meat industry are already used in pet food. The problem is, the pet food companies manufacture foods for the largest markets - i.e. dogs and cats. And it just isn't worth their while to spend money on marketing a processed snake food, to people who are generally not interested in buying it. In all honesty, a company making processed snake food would most likely end up losing money, rather than saving/making it.

I love animals but which ever way you look at it the snakes gotta eat you could say the same for mice, rats etc they are some peoples pets too so noones ever going to be happy.

I just thought the cartoony pic was a p*ss taker that s all, i was sad but i ve thought it over, at least the piggies are frozen ive heard horror stories on Youtube where live piggies and other animals are being fed to snakes :tickedoff: :'(

Ive reported it too.

Why is nobody reporting the people who sell living crickets on ebay? ::)

poor things, are being bred as food too. and sold over the internet.

Actually live crickets are allowed to be sold on ebay for snake feed
I know its horrible and I dont know why they allow it but thats the rules

yep I was. :)

Its just that yes we all love our pet piggies, but other animals are other peoples pets, me personally I find mice adoreable... yet people seem to think it way more "normal" and "acceptable" for them to be fed as food, bred for food, etc.

And I also just think its hypocritical to eat meat yourself but think that some animal shouldnt, because you like the particular animal that is about to be eaten.

I think because it isn't in our culture to contemplate eating guinea pigs that we cannot comprehend that other animals do. Personally, I have a few issues with Ebay allowing this as they could fall into the wrong hands. I'm a stickler for online safety what if someone bought this as a sick joke?

Also if this person is breeding to freeze pigs then that is totally wrong but proving that is another thing!

I agree the cartoon picture is terrible..how could they use such a cute cartoon for that advertisment. It's way too sad. But I also agree that snakes have to eat too. My husband has a snake for a pet that he absolutely adore but he only feeds him frozen mice. He said he could never feed him guinea pigs they are way too adorable and besides he know it would drive me insane. It's true alot of us eat meat. I wish I knew of an alternative to feed the snake instead of frozen mice. ugh.. :'( But to me feeding a snake anything live is just plain horrible.

Dead food is allowed to be sold on ebay because the animal is bred FOR food, so I doubt very much they will be taken off of Ebay.

My partner has all kinds of reptiles, snakes included. He buys frozen mice for his snakes (and the odd rat), as well as crickets and mealworms for his Gecko's, god knows how many breeds of frogs he has, and Preying Matus'. He has never fed his snakes GP's (and I hope once we move in together in a couple of months he never decides to feed them GP's...especially mine), as it is an uncommon source of food. If you think about snakes in the wild, they will eat GP's if they are avaliable and the right size for the snake (and sometimes even if not the right size). Everything deserves a shot at life, its all about the (and I know this sounds corny) "Circle Of Life".

The only snakes that will eat eggs, are egg eating snakes, it means they get the nutrience they need from the egg, so eating anything other will not benefit them much. The same as snakes that prey on birds. Most snakes can have a variety of things, mice, rats, birds, rabbits, and guineas (but how wide-spread are guineas in the wild?!).

Someone said earlier if this was a rat or mice board there would still be upset over it, its because it happens to be guineas pig (which is rare food for snakes) that its an issue here.

I personally don't like the thought of GP's being fed to them, but some people do it, I just have the comfort of knowing that its not a favourite on the list of food for snakes as it is quite rare food for them.

all sorted ;D

Yes - i think they were saying it as a statement for themselves - i.e. THEY love animals ;)

I'm really glad i found this reptile/guinea pig thread.

I really wanted a royal python but then i saw videos of people feeding live cute popcorning guinea pigs to their pythons and boas. And it gave me nightmares so now i don't want the nice snake i bonded with cos it might eat my guinea pigs but besides the point..

How could people do that - let guinea pigs run around their house near a snake then all of a sudden I'm watching this cute piggy have the life squeezed out of it.. And then parade it on youtube.

yes i meant that I love animals not to you iloveanimals ;D ;D
you get me ? :D

i eat meat so i cant be critical at all. i love lamb but i feel bad eating it so i dont eat it that much.

it is bad , but youtube should nt be allowing this on their site among other things its sick ! :tickedoff:

I know its hard to see piggies like this but Snakes have to eat too, its just nature. As long as the animals are killed humanely then its not as bad as it seems. Just remember at one time people used to feed live animals to snakes, it is much better that the piggies are dead and dont suffer. As far as feeding snakes dog food instead, this would not be sufficient for them as tinned dog Food is 80% water and does not contain much goodness at all, even for dogs.

Having frozen food for snakes is just like us going down to the supermarket and buying a joint of beef or Lamb etc... the guinea pigs have probably suffered less than the cows or sheep did.

Snakes that are native to this country would not eat guineas because they would not have encountered any in the wild. Pet snakes are animals that are being kept in countries where they are not native, so is an unnatural practice anyway.

Daft Scots Lass - brilliant they have got rid of it O0 O0 O0
