Please Help, Haypoke

I feel like there was an article here about haypoke but I’m in a rush so I can’t find it;
I woke up this morning and immediately noticed that Winifred had one eye shut with a lot of gunge around it, which I assume is haypoke. My mum got her out and washed her eye but we’re not sure what to do. Her eye opened up when my mum started holding her and was very red when I first saw her.

this pic was taken as soon as I woke up. She’s slowly opening and closing her eyes. Do I need to get her to a vet or will it heal by itself? Also she’s developed a bit of a head tilt, I’m assuming it’s because she can’t see properly?

Please have her seen as soon as possible, ideally today! Eye injuries can deteriorate very quickly and the damage can larger than visible to the naked eye.

The sooner you can start treatment, the greater the chance for a quick and smooth recovery and the less the risk of losing the eye.

Thank you so much, I’ve been looking around for exotic vets but I have to wait until my mum gets home. Do you know how much (generally) it is to get this treated in the Berkshire area or just UK in general?

Take her to the vet, straight away. It could deteriorate quickly.

Even a decent general vet should be able to deal with the initial treatment, which is always a course of antibiotic drops or gel (usually isathal or in a really bad case chloramphenicol).
Also ask for a lubricant like visco tears to keep the eye hydrated and a painkiller/anti-inflammatory.

For some reason, my own piggies seem to time their eye injuries for weekends and bank holidays or bad ones for late evenings, so I have seen my fair share of general out-of-hours vets where you have to take your potluck.

Thank you so much, got a vet appointment tonight at 7 with a vet that is only about 3 metres from my house! Never knew it was there! Booked for both piggies to be seen too, it’ll be nice to have a checkup!

Great you found a vet off the locator. Hoping all goes well. Expect eye drops

Got back from the vet about 40mins ago, got both girls checked and Winifred had two pieces of hay in her eye, poor thing! One was 1.5cm long!

Also got the girls checked for mites because I noticed them shaking and scratching a lot, but the vet said their skin was perfect! Got some eyedrops and was told to do it twice a day for a week.

you should get her to a vet as soon as you can so that they can have a look at her bad eye, i hope everything goes well with your piggie and hope she gets better soon!

Well done for getting her seen so quickly, and good idea to take a companion and get both looked at at the same time..
We had a similar situation with Eddi a while ago - I couldn't even see any hay, but he was 'winking' so we took him along to our general local vet (not a specialist) and she quickly removed the hay, and prescribed eye drops.
He was back to normal in a couple of days (although we continued with a full course of eye drops).

Were you given Isathal for her? That is great stuff cleared Christian bad haypoke in 3 days.

It’s surprising that more piggies don’t suffer from hay poke.

Hi everybody, thank you for the replies! I got given the eye drops and Winifred's eye is healing perfectly, it's completely opened back up with only a slight blue tinge after 2 days. She hates being picked up everyday but I'm so glad she's getting better! Once we've given the eyedrops to her for a week, I'll show everyone her progress for each day (we've been taking pics)
