Please help I don’t know what is wrong

Hi everyone,

My guinea pig has red around her eyes that are a bit crusty. Her belly is making noises and she is making different noises and she is walking strange. just isn’t her usual self. I don’t know what to do.

Hi and welcome

HUGS

Please contact an out-of-hours vet. You can google or get a contact number from your regular vet clinic's phone message. If there isn't one you can get to, give your vet a call first thing in the morning for an emergency slot.
Please note that late night out of hours consultations have high fees and you will see the duty vet, which is usually a general vet but it can save lives.

All of these symptoms sound worthy of a vet visit. Hopefully they can give you some guidance and treatment. Best wishes for your piggie, I hope she makes a fast recovery!

Hello and welcome to the forum. I’m so sorry your piggy is poorly. I hope it’s something easily treatable 🤞🏻

Hi guys, she was taken to the vet and given some critical care powder to help hydrate her. the vet said give her a couple days and if not take her back to be euthanised :( I feel so helpless just watching her die and can’t stop crying, I need to do something but don’t know what to do. Is there specialist vets for guinea pig etc, i really can’t cope with her dying i love her so much

I’m sorry to hear this

What diagnosis did they give?
Is the vet you saw knowledgeable on guinea pigs? Was she given any medication? Painkillers, gut stimulants?
How old is she?

Please make sure you are giving her the critical care every 2 hours and that you are weighing her every morning so you are sure you are getting enough critical care into her. She needs at least 40ml but ideally at least 60ml of critical care per day: critical care is food not strictly rehydration, and it is essential to keep her gut functioning.
Yes there are specialist vets and those who are experienced and knowledgeable in guinea pigs. However, out of hours cover does mean you won’t necessarily find a knowledgeable vet today

This is our vet list. The vets on here are recommended as being either exotic vets or knowledgeable and experienced piggy vets.

Sorry to hear this. As others have said the critical care will help keep her digestion going which is essential.

Re weekend vets, my vets are Beaumont Sainsburys in Camden RVC Small Animal Veterinary Practice and Hospital which is open on Sundays and there is nearly always an exotic specialist there all weekend, but that's probably too far for you. I am not sure if they (or other exotic vets) ever give phone advice?

All the best, we all know how horrible it feels to be worrying like this.

I hope you can find a cavy savvy vet for your piggy. They'll have a better idea about a diagnosis and treatment. Good luck.

We took her back to the vet she still hasn’t poked it’s been about three days. they gave gut stimulants and laxative. gave about five hours ago and no poo and she is now making funny breathing sounds :( Is this the end? I have tried everything, i love her so much i can’t stop crying

I'm sorry, I don't know. Sending you lots of love, if that's OK, or just care at this difficult time.

Very sorry to hear Luna has passed. Snuggle softly at the bridge little one 🌈 Be gentle with yourself as you grieve 🫂
