Just been out to feed my pigs and one of my girls, Custard, semed fine, she ran from one end of the hutch to the other into the igloo. She had squashed Gerri in so i lited the igloo up to let her out and when i went to put it back I geve Custard a little nudge for her to move so i didnt squash her and she just sat and then she let me pick her up which she never ever does. She seemed floppy and not herself. So i put her back down so i culd assess her and she just sat there and could hardly move. She chewed on some spinach but she was salivating a lot. she is making little whinging noises when she moves or i move her. She is showing the same symptoms as my girl Crumble did last Feb. Crumble was Custards baby, she died a few days before she was 2. Custard is approx 4. The vets said it was something neurological and she had lost the ability to swallow. I'm hoping this isn't what is wrong with Custard. At the moment she is in an igloo wrapped in a towel, she has hay in there and i have given her a small amount of science recovery and some water. I didnt want to stress her too much. I've also given her 0.4 ml of panacur because after i lost Crumble i heard of a friends guinea pig who had had similar symptoms and it had been intestinal parasites. her guinea pig surived but was left blind and he cant walk properly. Custard had an upset tummy at the end of december, which i know is a symptom of worms, she had 0.4ml of panacur then and was on fibreplex for a few days and seemed fine after that, i wonder if it was worms and they havent gone compleyely with her only having one dose..can anyone suggest anything...i'm so upset!!

Just wanted to say sorry for the spelling mistakes i was trying to type quickly to get the thread on asap! :)

also ive just realised that ive put this in the wrong section, i dont know how to change it sorry

I'm sorry I dont know what may be wrong with your girl but I can advise you to urgently get in touch with Laura at Guinea pig helpline, you can text her number is on this site...www.guineapighelpline.com
She will be able to advise on what may be wrong and how to make Custard more comfortable and whether an emergency vet should be contacted. Best wishes xx

Thanks, I do have an emergency vet but it costs £80 before they would look at her and i dont have the money. I have spoken to a rodentologist, barbara and she advised to keep her warm and in the quiet and to keep up her fluids and science recovery overnight and see the vet in the morning. I have just been in and given her more food and water and a cuddle. she was moving around a bit more than earlier so hopefully she might be picking back up a bit. Fingers crossed. I'll check on her again in another hour or so. I dont want to move her away from the others at this stage so she doesn't get more stressed. Thanks for any help :)

really hope Custard is ok, sending vibes and keeping fingers and paws crossed here.

I dont know if your vets are the same, but i can ring mine just to get advice over the telephone?

Good luck x

Worms in guinea pigs are actually relatively rare. I would make sure you get to the vet first thing, if she appears to be drooling then I would make sure her teeth (including molars) are checked thoroughly.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I decided to take Custard to the emergency vet because she started to have what looked like seizures and i'm sorry to say that she died on the way there. The vet checked her and said that she looked a perfectly healthy pig and didnt have any idea why she had died so suddenly. I mentioned that her baby, Crumble had gone in a similar way and he said there might be something genetic that caused it. I didn't want to hear that really becuse I still have Custards other baby, Apple, she's nearly 3 and seems to be in good shape. It's so hard when we lose one of these precious little animals, we grow to love them so much. RIP my little baby and remember to find Crumble and look after her xxxxxxx
