we're just waiting for the taxi to go to the vets.

her eye has completely sunken back and her head is tilted to that side. 8...

i'm scared. what could it be? 8...

Oh poor maisie and you! Sorry i have no idea but wanted to send some healing vibes and huggles fingers crossed it can get sorted xxxxxxx

Most likely either an injury to the eye (is she with other pigs?) or an infection/ abcess either in the ear, behind the eye/tooth roots whatever - the vet will hopefully be able to find out the actual cause/site of infection and advise appropriate treatment

If pus is found it might be a good idea to have a swab taken and cultured. One my pigs was recently found to have an ear infection/abcess (sudden and dramatic head tilt in front of my eyes) with what turned out to be a multi-drug resistant pseudomonas.... only gentamycin or polymyxin B antibiotics were effective...it was resistant to the normal baytril, septrin and azithromycin.

If it's an eye injury then this can be treated with drops or ointment (if more serious the eye can be removed but again, I have had a pig who had to have an eye removed after a fight with her cage mates... the op was fine and the piggie is still enjoying popcorning round her cage)

Hope it's nothing serious and easily sortable.

x

Sorry I can't offer any advice but just wanted to send my best wishes, hope poor Maisie is okay. x

fingers crossed she is alright sorry i cant help but sending lots of healing vibes.

Oh I hope she will be okay. Update us when * get back. Poor little lady. Sending healing vibes her way.

we're home. thanks for all the vibes.

on the way there maisie's head was tilted and she had her head on the ground and looked ill.

when we got there they saw her straight away and as they opened her eye to have a look, a piece of hay poked out, but it was stuck right into the eye, kind of under the eye ball. :(

they took her through the back and put that anaesthetic eyewash in and then removed the hay. it was a really long strand and sharp. then they rinsed her eye and as soon as they did that, her head went back to the normal position. so the tilt was just a reaction to the pain i think.

she's on eye drops 3x a day and metacam 2x a day, for a week and we are back next week because there is an ulcer in the eye now which we need to make sure doesn't cause any further problems.

it must have been such a relief for maisie to have the hay out. she looked much better straight away. her eye looks pretty bad though. :(

i was so worried. maisie looks glad to be home though and they're both having some refreshing cucumber to cool them down. x

I remember when one of my piggies had a sharp piece of hay stuck in her eye it was horrible though she didnt have a head tilt.

The eye will go cloudy just to let you know but its just the eye healing. x

it was awful to see her eye like that. she had it happen a couple of months back but that was nowhere near as bad. this really scared me because she tilted her head - i was thinking all sorts. :...

thanks for telling me about the cloudy eye, saves me panicking again! rolleyes

my poor little girl. so hopefully a week of meds and drops now and she will be ok. we have to take her straight back before then if the eye doesn't look any better.

Ouch...sounds awful! Glad to hear that she's already perked up though - hope it heals very quickly. I wouldn't have really thought of a hay poke as being a possible cause of a head tilt so it's very useful to know. (One of mine once had a nasty hay poke but there was no accompanying tilt) x

i didn't know they can tilt their head either from pain etc so that's why i panicked so much. her head has been fine since the hay was removed though. i haven't ever heard of it happening but the vet said she has seen that a few times.

maisie had her eye drops earlier and she was so good but it must have hurt to open her eye because she held it so tightly closed and was almost scared to open it. she did eventually though and we had lots of cuddles.

her eye does look sore but she seems ok. they've just had their tea and she was eating that fine.

i feel so sorry for her though.

thank you for the support. x

Poor baby, hope she is feeling much better soon. My Terk has doen exactly the same thing at the mo, is on drops and pain relief.

Poor girl. I'm glad she's feeling a bit more comfy now. Good that you got her to a vet straight away. Sending healing vibes. xx>>>

Oh gosh poor little Masie. That must have been so painful for her. I really hope she recovers soon.:rose:rose

Oh wow, I went from panic to relief in less than a page! I'm so pleased the vet got the hay out and that she is going to be okay - phew!

Phew!

Well done on your prompt action.....it may go cloudy..and it may also go bloodshot. If you have an antibiotic eye drop (either fusithalmic of chloramphenicol) then she shoiuld be fine within a few days.

It's also good she got some metacam for the pain so keep a watch on her eating/weight/poo output. A few syringes of critical care might not go amiss (unless she is happy tucking into her favourite veggies!)

the eye drops are chloramphenicol. her eye is looking alot better already. the redness has gone down loads but it is cloudy. but i can't believe how much better it's looking already. really pleased.

she's eating completely normally and even asking for 'rewards' after her drops and metacam.

she is sooooo cute having her metacam. she drinks it from the syringe. her little tongue is too cute! :))x)

i'm keeping an eye on her poops etc and her weight aswell just to be on the safe side but all seems fine. :)

eyedrops again at 6pm. she still keeps her eye tightly closed for a little bit after but she is opening her eye much quicker than she was. then we have lots of cuddles. x)

quick update - maisie is doing amazingly! :) her eye is looking great and we reduce her metacam dose tomorrow. she's fine in herself aswell. :)
