hi have just come home and been to the guineas, horrified to find one of my boys ozzy is very poorly,my vets is shut? apparently they only do half days on wednesdays he looks like hes hunch backed and he looks sleepy there is no discharge from eyes or mouth and no evidence of diaorea ok i know thats not how it spelt!
is there any thing i can do for him until i get him to vets tomorrow
i have given him cuddles and felt him all over there are no lumps or bumps but his hair looks a little greasy, but only around his neck am currently scouring over my guinea books trying to find something of any help
can any one give me any ideas of what this could be or how to make him comfy until the morning I'm so afraid of losing him:(

Has your vet got an emergency number on his answering machine? Most vets do!

I am sorry, this must be such a shock for you!

If your vet is shut they should have an emergency number you can call out of hours - or try another local vet?

If he's sitting hunched up in a corner that's not a good sign. Is he eating / drinking / pooping normally?

I hope you have managed to find another vet you can take him to. You don't have to be registered with them. Just phone and say you have a very sick guinea pig who needs an appointment today. I am sure most will fit you in.

hes moving around now but is sticking close to smudge his mate and when i try to get ozzy out smudge is chattering and going for me
he has been eating and drinking normally and was completley fine this morning when i took thier veg down around 7 30 am
he looks like a hunch backed guinea! he looks really sleepy but he hasnt eaten any of the food ive just put in and i have checked poop and bottom no diaorea and no sores
the out of hours surgery has recently re located and is now an hour away by car and i dont drive my best friend has always been on hand if i needed to go anywhere but she was taken in to hospital yesterday for an emergency c section i have no way of getting him there hubby is working lates today
i dont know what to do!

Bus? Taxi? Call the out of hours vet and ask them to come to you?

It doesn't matter how he was this morning; the emergency is now that he isn't eating or drinking.

Start force feeding, you can use the fine pellet dust at the bottom of your food bag, mix it with water and syringe it into the back of his mouth. He'll hate it, which is why we call it force feeding. You need to get food into him if he isn't eating or his digestive tract will slow down, stop and then he is unlikely to recover.

am so sorry that i didnt get back on last night,
ozzy is fine! went back down to him and managed to get him out i put him in a small indoor hutch with a nice fleece and lots of hay and water and a bowl of cucumber to temp him its his favourite!
within 10 mins he had 3 HUGE bouts of diaorea at this point i had booked the appointment and was waiting for my babysitter to turn up as i have four children, within a few mins he was drinking and munching on his cucumber!
i took him to the vets by which time he had really percked up!
vet checked him over his eyes were still a little sleepy but his back wasnt hunched any more and he was wheeking and eating and drinking vets thinks he had a tummy upset he has given me some meds and ozzy seems to be ok now his eyes are still not quite right but hes running around here next to me the vet said poss something hed eaten and the only thing we can think that they all had different was i picked up a bag of what i thought was just cabbages but had leek in it
is this not good for piggies had looked through a couple of books and cant find it in do give OR dont give could it have been the leek?
obviuously i have to keep him indoors with me and keep a close eye for a few day but fingers crossed he seems to be ok
was so scared he was not going to get better :...

Leek is only okay if chopped (otherwise the long strings can cause problems).

I am glad he is ok and sounds like the vet visit was definitely required, hope his tummy is back to normal quickly!

You do realise now you have brought him in, you should keep him in for the whole winter now as putting him out will cause shock to the body as the temperature difference will be large! they can only really cope with a 5C change!

Glad Ozzy is ok.
Anything oniony is not really good for piggies, next time you buy some by mistake, make soup and come and join in the midnight chat club. x

I m so pleased to hear that Ozzy is feeling better. Also, thank you for this thread as it just goes to show what can happen if a piggy eats a food that isn't good for them xx

"Leek is only okay if chopped (otherwise the long strings can cause problems)."

Their incisor teeth cut any type of food into "bite-sized" pieces. They will not take in long strings.

"they can only really cope with a 5C change! "

Really? More like 15-20C change in the UK.

thank you, all of you for your support
ozzy is already back to his cheeky self, i spoke to my vet about keeping him indoors and he said for a few days until hes better,as mine are kept in hutches in a heated locked shed he said he will be fine to go back down there, plus he is missing his friend smudge! so will probably take him back down mid week
i was so frightened!, i buy the carrot and cabbage ready shredded mix sometimes and i thought id picked that up
i have learnt a very hard and expensive! lol lesson always check before i give it to my babies,i could have lost him
thank * and hugs to * all x x x
