Hello,

I am new to this site and I have noticed my beautiful little guinea pig limping today and I cant get to the vet for a few days. We are lucky enough to have adopted 5 adorable guinea pigs into our lives and it is breaking my heart seeing her sit in the corner watching the others play, as she must be in a lot of pain:( I held her this morning and carefully checked for any obvious problems but there are none visible to the eye...there is no chicken wire fencing...infact there entire cage is child proof so I dont understand.

Can anyone give me any suggestions on what this may be.

Why cant you get her to the emergency vet? This is the only thing that will be of any use. She may have broken her leg. Guinea pigs do hide pain so it will be worse then it seems. There is no advice I can really offer you as she needs to be seen by an expert. If you are short of money try your local Blue Cross or RSPCA hospital.

unfortunately I live in a small town that does not have a small pet vet:( The nearest vet is 2.5 hours away and I will never make it time with work...I have to wait until my day off on Saturday and want keep her comfortable until then...
 
Is she still putting weight on the leg and walking or not at all?
If she is putting on weight, then it is more likely just a sprain; it can happen quite easily, just landing badly after a popcorn. Please check the leg from the shoulder/hip joint downward - the sprain is not necessarily in the visible leg/foot.

How old and heavy are your piggies? You can get young children's nurofen or calpol for short term pain relief in an emergency, although we still recommend people to seek vet care and not home treat if possible.

Please weigh your girl daily to make sure that she is not losing weight from the pain. If necessary, feed her separately.
 
Thank you for your great suggestions and taking the time to give me some useful tips.
She is 1.5 years old and weighs a little over 24 ounces.
she is walking around more now but I think you may be right in that it looks like it could be a sprain...you can see she is trying to keep her weight off and she limps in her hut. Do you think this sounds like something that will heal itself
naturally, or should I take tomorrow off work and get her to the vet?

If she is able to put a little weight on the leg, it sounds like a sprain. I have had two piggies who have had a sprain and they just kind of wondered around as normal but limping. They were both as right as rain within a couple of days.

I would keep a close eye on her tonight and see how she is tomorrow. If there is an improvement, it is likely to be a sprain which will heal itself. If she is any worse, please take her to the vet

aww thank you, I love them.

Jasmine is the bigger one (getting the kiss from Caramel in one of the photos and eating the hay hut with Blondie)
Blondie is the little blonde one
Willow is my little black beauty
Caramel is a little version of jasmine lol..she is the most affectionate and always purrs when we hold her (they all do but she wont stop lol, its so cute)
and frazzle is the one with wirey hair...like shes being electrocuted lol..just adorable.

How many piggies do you have and what are there names?

They are jasmine (white and brown big girl)
Caramel (white and brown junior)
Willow (our little black beauty)
Blondie (our little blondie)
Frazzle (she has wired hair and looks like she being electrocuted lol, soo cute!)

My Jasmine has a Sprain

Hello everyone, so we made it to the vet yesterday...she has a sprain:( I have some pain relief for her but I'm reluctant to give her any incase it masks the pain and she puts all her weight on it. The vet told me this wouldnt make a difference, but I'm not convinced. She didnt even want to give her xrays! :(
So upset, she is still limping and I was told to keep her separated from the others to force her to relax, but she looks so sad. I am working today but will be home at lunchtime to check on her...do you think I should give her pain relief? really worried that it will cause her more pain in the bigger picture...
 
I'd give it as it's an anti inflammatory too and that's important.

okay then...thank you will do it now, should I keep her separated from the others? I had all of them in there playpen together yesterday and no one bothered her...I feel awful leaving her like this today
 
Personally I would leave her with her friends and keep an eye on them.

It will only stress her leaving her alone and if they aren't bothering her and you're watching then why not?
 
aww I'm glad its only a sprain for your little girl and nothing more serious. I hope the pain relief starts helping her soon so she can make a good recovery
