Sam :)

Hello I am new to all this but have always wanted to keep guinea pigs. To cut a long story short we brought two lovely girls Harriet and Thelma about 4 months ago. 2 weeks ago Harriet began to lose all her fur and seemed to be losing weight. Her skin was all itchy and flakey and literally within a week we lost her. Researching this afterwards we have come to the conclusion it was probably mites - it was so fast we couldnt believe it. Anyway Thelma now seems to be developing the same problem. Her skin has gone dry and there are some patches of red where I think she has scratched so hard its become an open wound. Shes is also starting to lose her fur. I have read about ivormectin and know that you can buy it for sheep and cattle but use much smaller doses. I need advice on what to buy, and where from because looking on the internet there are so many different products I dont know where to start. I dont want to sound mean but I cant afford to take her to a vet and I am pretty certain I have already diagnosed the problem its just a case of ordering the medication pronto.

Any thoughts, advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou

Sam

I would definately try to take her to a vets ASAP. Even if you're pretty sure its mites the rate your other piggy went down hill is startling so it might indicate another problem.

The first time I went to my 'Pet Doctors' vet the consultation was free and I only had to pay for the medication. Not sure if it was a short term offer or their general policy. Maybe you could ring round and check if vets near you have a similar thing?

Hi Sam,

Welcome to the forum! So sorry to hear of your guinea passing over. Yes, does sound like mites! We had two of our sows get it over Christmas and it was so quick (within 24 hours) they had lost 200g each and most of their fur I just couldn't believe it. I spoke to my vet who gave me Xeno 450 now this is available online at http://www.vetuk.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1500 I got extra from here as it is always handy to have in. cost £16.00 plus del. My vet charges £24.00 so whichever why you go its still going to be over £20.00.

I would be inclined to take her to the vet for a correct diagnosis though.

Good luck with her and keep us posted on how she is,

Louise

you need to get some ivermectin for your piggies if they have mites.

you can get this from online - how old are the pigs that need treating?

Two of our piggies are currently being treated for mites and all i can say is you should definitely get your piggie to the vets. We tried to treat our two ourselves with ivormectin but it was so advanced and the piggies looked to be in pain so we took them to the vets. They are now very much on the mend although they have another injection due tomorrow and one the week after just to finish the course.

It sounds very drastic, so you'd better see the vet asap and get a course of injection!

Thinking of your poor girl and wishing her the best!
Vicky
