I have been using fleece for a few weeks now in a 2x4 cc cage with 2 girls. So far, and I know this is unusual, about 95% of the wee is in one corner. I use a tray (like a plastic serving tray) in that corner with their food bowl and hay. I line the tray with newspaper and lay a couple folded paper towels over it (they absorb really fast compared to the newspaper) I dump the tray and do fresh newspaper and paper towel every morning. Most days, when the poo piles up in that corner, I lay another layer of paper towel over the poo (because they step in it). I strategically hold down the paper towel with the bowls. So far, neither of my girls chews newspaper. Amazingly, about 70% of the poo is in that corner too. GOOD GIRLS!
I use a layer of towel under my fleece and have been changing the fleece after about 4-5 days. No smell. I also sprinkle some baking soda on the towel under the fleece, to help absorb any odors. I am very sensitive to the smell of piggies, and really don't like it, and so far I have very very little smell. The biggest smell I have is from the Timothy grass.

I have never washed them before use. 
The reason for washing fleece is to break down the protective layer, but as cotton doesnt have this i see no reason to wash it. You should just be able to pop in straight in!

Hi just to ditto the hay toilet area is a god send and can be easily changed more frequently and also wanted to add that you don't need to have loads of washing detergent and do not use fabric conditioners AT ALL. This affects the absorbency of the fleece and also makes it really pongy. I usually wash mine like I used to wash my cloth nappies (some were fleece) firstly on a rinse wash then a normal 50 or 60 degree wash then an extra rinse sometimes depending on if I was in need of them in a hurry! I use pads on the bottom btw then a towel doubled then doubled fleece on top but I do have a large hay litter tray for my 2 boys hth x

I use drynites mats. Its for kids who wet beds, its very cheap in Sainsburys and works magic. http://www.drynites.co.uk/Products/bed_mats.aspx
it covers my ferplast 140 and i use newpaper under it and then fleece on top.
i do wash fleece more oftern than i would change normal bedding.
i also noticed that putting a cats litter tray for hay helps. they pee in there, so i just change that every day.
but with fleece you do have to do several poop picks a day.
just one of those things, but i just couldnt afford expensive bedding
ps. i have a candle on a table by the pigs, helps with the smell.

I wouldn't use scented candles near piggies though, they can be very sensitive to anything like air fresheners etc, which shouldn't be used in the same room, as there is a chance they can do neurological harm to them, as piggies are very sensitive to chemical smells.

ah thank you, but don't worry its not a scented candle, just normal non smelly. I think as the candle burns it consumes the smelly air. so it works
