My Guinea pigs have mites, i think, i dont know how long!
my parents came over today, and noticed strange bugs crawling on them.
My mother owned guinea pigs, and said it was mites, but doesn't know what to do.
Someone, help!
do i need a spray, or do i need to come them out!? i dont want to hurt them!

I would take your Guinea pigs to the vets for a proper diagnosis as it can have terrible consequences if you use the wrong product to treat the issue.

If you can see them they're probably hay lice, it's far better to get treatment at the vet for this because they're a pain to get rid of.

Get it checked out though, got to be sure! :)

Ive gone and bought some thing to remove mites, if it works, I'm blessed, i am not using it right now though, because its cold, and its a shampoo, so i dont want them to be too cold, so i can begin treatment tomorrow, if it ends up worse, I'm going to the vet.

What have you bought? Please be aware that a lot of store bought shampoos can actually be toxic to guinea pigs.

I went and bought it from the vets, she said if it does not work, come back and then we could get an appointment, it was my friend, (she's a vet, lucky me!) And i found out it is Only hay mites! They have lost some hair, so i say i bought them with mites, from the pet store which I'm pretty angry about, and one has been experiencing dandruff, but other then that, i say they are fine, I'm going to give all of them a little comb, then bathe them tomorrow.

Please listen to what Cavy King Fu is saying

There are so many reasons why shampooing is not the way to go! ,
IF you defanatly cannot see a vet then l will post a link in a moment for the next best option

I don't mean to sound rude, but it's a bit upsetting to me that you think it's too expensive to get your piggies healthy and out of pain or discomfort.

My animals go to the vet even when I don't have a lot of money, because it's important that they aren't suffering.

Please reconsider the vets, don't forget that piggies have the right to healthcare just as much as we do.

I Know, i would bring them to the vets, but i need to pay for food, litter, ect,ect for them aswell, i am reconsidering the vets, but i dont think it is really needed since the shampoo i bought them from the vets seemed promising.

(I was searching you...:sly:)
I agree and I add this shampoo can end up in a waste of money. Anyway, as you are in difficulty with money, try to save them from other things... litter can be substitute with old newspapers+fleece, the hay is less expensive than a Mc Donald's meal; the grass is the best food and is free and a check at the vet is not at all expensive... Gizzy gave you some names, try to call them.:)

Searching me? :))

I also agree that the shampoo can be a waste of money. Plus pigs hate to be bathed :))

You have already said that your friend is a vet and you have been to the vet and got some shampoo.
Has anyone actually examined your guinea pigs?
If not they should not be dispensing medicine (medicated shampoo) without seeing them first and properly diagnosing the problem.
If your friend is a vet surely she would take a quick look at them for 'mates rates' - maybe a coffee, or a home baked cake or some other favor from you if money is tight.

That's actually a very good point.

It can't be that far for petrol or that expensive in that case :hmm:

I would love to have a friend who is a proper, cavy savvy vet!

Or even just a good general vet.
I can picture it now:
Me: Dear friend who happens to be a vet, would you like to come over for dinner and wine next week?
Vet friend: Why that sounds lovely. Would Tuesday suit you?
Me: Tuesday would be great. I shall start menu planning immediately.

Tuesday:
Me: Welcome to my home dear friend who happens to be a vet. Please sit here while I do and get you a glass of wine.
Vet: Thank you lovely Swissgreys. You are an impeccable host.
Me: Oh dear, I seem to have returned without wine but with a guinea pig. Would you mind quickly checking Eddi's butt for any sings of lingering fungal? I shall be back in a moment with Ruby who as been off her food lately and could also do with a quick once over. I will also bring a thick towel - she isn't the easiest to handle. And while you are here you might as well look at Lucy and Oreo too - at least they won't bite you....

Haha that's an amazing plan, they wouldn't be able to see through it either as it's so subtle!

Haha Yes !
I Have given them, sort of a bath, i just wet a t-shirt, and popped it in their igloo, upside down, and then i placed one at a time in and cleaned them all, i gave them a very gentle comb too! They have not scratched once, and i seen the figures of the mites in the water, so i might do it once more again, and if it continues I'm going to my friend thats happens to be a vet!
