Dudley was netuered about 3 weeks ago. When he had his check up it appears that one of his wounds had not healed as well as the other, i was told to keep an eye on it and she bathed it for me in salt water. All seemed to be going ok after that.
Ive checked him again today and he seems to have a large swollen area on the left hand side of his privates. I have felt the lump and it is very hard and is exactly round in shape. When i looked closer there was a small scab which was hanging off so i pulled it slowly and some puss came out with it (i think it was puss, hard puss) but there no more of this just a small hole.
Please take a look at the photos i took, there not great but i need some advice. He is booked in at the vets for 9.10 in the morning but I'm worried now and would like your views and opinions on what it could be.

The photos make it look smaller than it is as its very noticable when you look

Thanks

I would go back to the vet just to make sure, because it may get infected if there was puss. you could also try putting clean towels in his cage insted of hay or wood shaving as an extra hygine procausion while he is cleaning so his wound dosent get irrated xxashxx

Hope the appointment went well Chez! To me, it sounds like a post-neuter abscess.

most likely pop it,clean it all out, injection to boost him up a bit and usually this way on Baytril twice a day for a week.

keep an eye it doesnt swell again cos oh do they stink when they pop.

That looks a lot like an abscess to me, and in exactly the same place as my ralfie had one. If it is an abscess the vets will give you something to flush and pack it with and hopefully it will clear up quickly, nasty things though poor fella and they smell so bad :( hope it's sorted quickly
Here's a pic of Ralfie's

Thanks. Is your Ralfie ok now? how long did it take for him to get better? What do you mean by pack it (sorry if thats a dumb question) ?

thanks

Ouch, poor Ralfie them :(

When Boomer had his abcess, (not a post neuter one though) after it was cleaned out we packed it with some Gorgeous Guineas Aloe Vera gel, packing is basically just filling the hole with a safe material. Boomer's did come back a bit shortly after it burst, but not as bad as before by any means and we just flushed it with lightly salted water every day until it looked like it was a normal wound with no pus underneath. We were told to scrape away (very gently) the the scab every time it was cleaned so it bled a little to make sure the pus was effectively removed.

As Julie says, packing is filling the hole with something soothing/antiseptic, we used antiseptic cream from the vets but GG stuff i'm sure works great too. Ralfie is fine now, it's a horrible thing to have to do to them flushing and packing an abscess but its for their own good and they get used to it. I think it took about 2weeks to fully heal but this was a while ago so it may have been slightly more/less time x

Scrap that part about the Aloe Vera gel packing in my last post Chez, I think we did that with Dylan's sebaceous cyst, not Boomer's abcess, sorry about that, it's all merging into one! This sounds pretty bad, but I honestly can't remember what we packed it with, if anything, it was quite a long time ago :(

I have a feeling we just gently removed the scab and flushed it daily until no sign of pus came off with the scab and then we just left it well alone after that. I think it took a good week before we could leave it alone. Then once it started to scab up properly we used GG's Lavender & Myrrh as lavender is a natural antiseptic, but we never use the Lavender & Myrrh on open wounds, we use Aloe Vera gel instead.

Poor little love!
I would have thought that it is an infection. Is it the side that wasn't healing as well as the other?
Hope all goes well at the vet. I will be thinking of him - and Umbrella will also - as he was neutered 10 days ago and had his stitches out today.

Well I'm really upset as i still dont know whats happened :( the vet said shes doesnt know what it is or what to do. Shes given me some metacam to hopefully get rid of the swelling. Ive got to put a drop on his food for 7-10 days and if no better then she may need to operate :( i dont know what to do. I'm not sure I'm happy with whats she said but she is the vet! I dont want to wait 7 days really. She didnt give him and injection as she didnt want him to squeek. I feel like crying, i wish i had never put him through this, my poor little man. :(

Chez love i'm so sorry to hear this :(:(:(
erm i think i'd pm both Laura (ccc4) and Alcesterpigs they have great hands on knowledge xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
good luck sweetie, all paws crossed xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
oh in meantime i'd be bathing in really diluted and slightly warm salted water it can't harm and i'd be giving the metacam as pain relief xx>>>
HUGS for you too chick xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Don't worry he'll be ok and don't blame yourself these things can happen to any pig. Does it feel very hard to touch or feel as if it could burst? Ralfie's burst you see and a LOT of cream thick pus came out that had the worst smell i'd ever smelt. If it bursts by itself you could start flushing it, with another of Ralfie's abscesses the vet burst it herself then began the flushing so i'm just wondering if it is actually an abscess as the vet would probably have know what to do x

Hhmm i'm really not sure sorry :( i don't know what a testicle would feel like either because Ralfie's never had any (well not with me anyways) x

thats ok thanks for your help. I'm going to do this treatment for 3 days and if his no better ill take him to a diff vet and get a second opinion. His fine in himself, eating, drinking and talking etc so i shouldnt worry to much and his in no pain, i just hate not knowing what to do for the best xx

I think what you're doing is the best way to do it! Good luck i really hope it goes down or they at least find out what it is, it's good that he's fine in himself though x

I have been thinking about Dudley all day. It is just so difficult when you put them through an operation, not because of illness, but because you feel that it will give them more opportunity for a better life with either sows or boars.

It really shouldn't be a testicle if you had him neutered. However, I think MarthaAndMaud had something funny happen after a neutering. I will look back at her postings.

The thing is, was that lump there when you brought him home after the operation? Was it there after a couple of days or when did you first notice it?

A few more questions. Does it feel hot to touch? Does it hurt him when you touch it?

When one of my piggies had an abcess under her chin, it did feel hard and it didn't appear to hurt her. When a young boar of mine had an abscess on his back from a bite wound, it didn't appear hard ... just a soft mass which was painful.

Anyway you could get a second opinion?

Thanks Goldie. The lump wasnt there after the op. When we went back for his checkup it wasnt there either. I checked him everyday after that and he seemed to heal fine. My own stupid fault but after he healed what i though was fine i stopped checking him everyday and only when i cleaned him out like all the others. Thats when i noticed it. Its exactly round in shape like a marble and appears quite hard but doesnt hurt him at all. The vet was poking and proding and he was fine with it. I havent noticed it feel hot but i will check that when i go to give him his meds in a moment.
I will defo get a second opnion but will give the meds a few days to see if they work. I jsut dont see how it will as its not just a swelling there obviously something there! i cant stop thinking about it and its really hit me hard as its my fault. I just got to do whats best for him now x

When Captain Jack had his op (not a neuter) he had patches of swelling like this and it was caused by bits of stitch not dissolving properly, which caused little areas of infection which then got swollen and burst. The bits of stitch managed to flush themselves to the surface and I removed them with a pair of tweezers. Not saying this is the problem with Dudley but just a thought. Hope he's ok, lovely lilac boy!

Ive just checked on his and felt the area. theres another lump the same shape and size above! I'm so worried. I'm ringing the vets again and asking for him to be seen by the lady who neutered him

i cant stop thinking about it and its really hit me hard as its my fault.

Please don't feel that! It's not your fault - you put him in the hands of an expert. If the vet didn't know what it was yesterday, then surely he or she is obliged to speak to another vet within the practice or get advice from an outside agency. Try that approach.

Ive been to another vets today. She was much better. She poked the lump and tried to syringe the stuff out. It was puss. As its hard puss she couldnt get it all out. his on antibiotics and i have to take him back in 7 days. if its no better she will operate :(

I had a similar experience with BOTH my boys who were neutered in May. Its was a abscess caused by a reaction to the 'chromic' stitches (not designed for guineas pigs but dogs/cats...).

I played the waiting game with baytril but in the end both boys had to have them drained by the vet. One was done under local anesthetic as it was very detatched and near the surface, the other was done under general as it was deep and there was more than one layer of infection. The bad bit is flushing the wound out, which has to be done 3 times a day after draining to stop the wound from closing up and sealing any infection in. I did this for about 7-10 days until the cavity closed up from the inside out. Once I stoppped flushing them out the scab totally healed and scarred over in about 2 days and both boys are now fine and loving their girls.

This might not be what happens with you little man but I just thought it might be helpful to see how the situation panned out with my two. Also I felt really bad torturing them and putting them thru everything, but looking back it was for their own good and they're now so much happier than they ever would have been as lone piggies...
