I have a 4.5 year old guinea pig named Frances who up until this week was very healthy. She has been hot and cold about her favorite veggies but I noticed on Monday that she wasn’t eating or pooping much. I took her to the vet on Tuesday and got metacam and antibiotics to help. She ate normally that evening and for breakfast but I saw that she has ZERO poops that evening and got very worried. I took her back to the vet who gave her subcutaneous fluids and metoclopramide to help her poop. Since then, Frances has begun to poop a bit but it is mushy and infrequent. Mostly when I exercise her she drops some while running. Please help! Is there anything else I can do? She’s been on the gut motility drug for almost two days now! She’s eating her veggies and some hay. Should I switch her to critical care? My vet said that veggies were ok as long as she’s eating but I’m not sure! Any advice to help my sweet girl would be appreciated!

Poop output usually shows what's going in 24 hours earlier so it sounds like she is not eating enough. Hay makes up 80% of the diet but it's hard to see how much they are eating. Switch from weighing once a week to daily to check any weight loss and step in with syringe feeding

Thank you! I will syringe feed her some critical care. Is it normal for her first poops to be soft on the gut motility drug?

It sounds like there is a gut upset so yes it doesn't sound surprising that the poops are a bit soft. Try adding some probiotics to the critical care as well

I checked on her and there is a fresh pile of poops! They are still mushy though. I am so relieved but will still try feeding her critical care. Can I give her lettuce as well as critical care or should I only give her the cc?

I would stick with hay, pellets and cc at present until her gut has settled

She had several poops yesterday morning but by evening and into today it was back to nothing. I have been getting her to take a bit of critical care. I had her on a massage pad today and could hear her stomach gurgling and every now and then she will lift up like she is trying to poop but nothing comes out. Should I keep massaging her or is that making it worse?
