This morning I went to give the pigs their breakfast and I noticed something wrong with Fuzzypeg's eyes.

They have this sort of fatty stuff around the edge of the eyeball. It's mainly around the lower part. Is this called fatty eye? I've never had a pig with this before and I don't know what I have to do...

It's on BOTH EYES and they look exactly the same so I've ruled out poke injuries etc. I've never seen anything like this before. He lives with 6 other pigs and none of them have these symptoms. Could it be something like hay fever? I haven't done anything different to their bedding... newspaper, megazorb, readi grass. He's almost four years old now... and he's never had anything like this before.

I am worried about my little boy. If it was just one eye I'd probably give him a course of Optrex Infected Eye drops, but it's both eyes which makes me confused. He's eating normally, hasn't lost weight and is his same busy little self.

Please help!

Hi,

I found this on Guineapig Lynx:

Pea Eye
Pea eye (or fatty eye) is a permanent protrusion of the conjunctival sac, thought to be inherited. Pea eye and fatty eye are frequently grouped together by vets as conjunctival swelling. These conjunctival protrusions can be removed by laser if they are interfering with vision. Cavies with pea eye generally do not seem to be uncomfortable and treatment is usually not necessary.

Hope this helps!

It could be the light but it looks kind of watery to me, I would get him to a vet who knows his onions about pigs.

He is lovely!

It is fatty eye, leave well alone. As I have said before, it bothers the owner more than the pig!

Al would fatty eye affect both eyes at the same time? Does it come and go also or is it just something that remains there all the time in older pigs?

Thanks!

A sow I had here not so long ago had fatty eye in both eyes, and has since passed 2 vet health checks, its more scarey for the owner then the pig and often the pig knows no different :)

It can affect both eyes simultaneously. I have 2 rescue boars, about six months old, one is fine the other has fatty eye much worse than Fuzzypeg. His lower eyelids are turned almost inside out. The condition stays with them, it doesn't come and go.

I've got a boar who is about five years old and he's got fatty eye - it started off in one eye and then just recently he developed it in the other! He's fine with it and it doesn't bother him.

It was something that developed as he got older though, which is interesting if it's a genetic thing.

Thanks everyone. My lovely boy is tucking into a corn on the cob now and seems his usual self. I've done a bit of research and it looks to be fatty eye. Thanks AP.

Will keep an 'eye' on it in any case but he's pottering around as usual and it certainly doesn't seem to be bothering him.

Ah... Mr Fuzzypeg might not be as super gorgeous in the looks department as he once was, but he'll always be beautiful to me! xoxo
