I'm sorry for the double thread, but my other one had a title too similar to my old thread and I'm worried it'll be ignored. I couldn't find out how to change the title.

I've noticed over the last hour or so Aurora wheezy sneezing and I'm really worried. Her breathing is also kind of laboured, but she is eating and running around like normal. I'm taking her to the vets tomorrow morning, will she be ok until then if she indeed does have a URI? Please help. She's kind of whining/sighing right now :'(

Is she the pig with the wee infection?

That does sound worrying, I think it can wait until the morning unless she gets any worse in which case you would need to call the emergency vet. Sounds like a URI though and if her breathing is laboured she may even have fluid on her chest too in which case she would need a diuretic such as Furosemide. At the least she will need antibiotics, what is she on for her wee infection? If her nose is stuffy you could also ask for Bisolvon which helps clear any mucous. You can also use steam therapy using a bowl or even better a steam inhaler with 2 drops of Olbas oil. It would be a good idea to ask for an anti-inflammatory such as Metacam too.

Thank you for your reply. I couldn't find out who had the UTI so I gave them both antibiotics. I don't understand, they're only 3 months old (today). They have fleece, they have clean hay, they have fresh food. I take the best care of them as I can. If Aurora dies I will be heartbroken. I'll keep an eye on her, but I haven't slept in 24 hours and I'm feeling pretty unwell. I just want to cry.

If it were up to me I'd take her to the vet now, but my parents are asleep and they'll be really angry with me.

I understand, please don't blame yourself, these things happen. What antibiotic are they already on? Is it Baytril or Septrin?

Baytril, but they finished their week's course of it a couple of days ago. I haven't noticed any blood in their urine at all, so I assume the infection has cleared up, thankfully.
Also, I haven't heard anymore sneezes from Aurora for about 10 minutes. Perhaps she just had something stuck in her nose?

Just checked your other thread, it is Baytril which is what the vet would most likely give you tomorrow anyway but she may need the diuretic I mentioned above and Bisolvon too.

It is possible it could be an allergy, what bedding is she on?

Ok, well I have some Baytril left. I could give it to her now? Good thing I didn't throw it away! They don't have bedding per se, just hay and a cuddle cup.

Your other post appeared while I was typing. It is possible, the vet may ask you to carry on with the Baytril in case though. Have you been giving probiotics too?

No, just baytril. Thank you so much for your help :'( <3 Should I give her the baytril?

I am incined to say yes but I do think it is best to check with the vet in the morning. I would also get some probitics too as Baytril can affect the gut and this is even more likely if she has another course. I use Avipro Plus from Vet Uk, but the vet should have some, maybe Fibreplex or Bio Lapis going by what my own vets sell. Where abouts are you?

hi i am in the same boat, my baby boy jerry has a uri and so does my 3 year old spike, spike had discharge running down his face from his nose, they are both on septrin, I also give then natural yoghurt, and pro-c as a probiotic, and vapour rub which i smear over their cage walls I also like to give a little more vitamin C which is quarter of a human tablet Vit C and sprinkle it in their food.

I also keep mine on fleece, and newspaper and they are cleaned out daily, I feel that my boys and girl suffer more when the seasons are changing and going from central heating to no heating and back to heating on, living in scotland the weather is so unpredicable, and this is when my boys and girl really suffer (I have 23 boys and 1 girl).

The seasons can definitely affect them I agree.

I am not sure about giving them natural yoghurt though as they are lactose intolerant and can't digest dairy (as am I).

Oh, I didn't know what you meant by bedding, sorry. They have fleeces. I'm going to give Aurora the baytril now because I read that it can be an effective treatment and the vet will most likely prescribe it again because she did the first time. I'll take her to the vet in the morning still and get any additional medicine she needs. I'm from near Reading, in the SE. Thanks again so much for your help <3

You're welcome.

If the vet wants to consider other antibiotics, Septrin, Azithromycin and Doxycyline are good for URIs.

I was told by my guinea pig vet who I moved to that the lactose intolerant part is just a myth, that they can have milk products, this helped one of my piggies that had a abscess, he had this abscess for 2 years. the vet said that natural yoghurt has extra probiotic properties than pro-C or avi-pro put together. the vet to ask is glenn at apex vets in denny.
