Hi everyone,

As part of a science invention project for his 7th grade class, my son has an idea for a mobile guinea pig treadmill-like exercise toy. He needs some help to gather some marketing data for his invention idea, and would like to ask if you could please help by completing the short 10 question survey below.

Thanks for your help!

That would be very dangerous to guinea pigs as they do not need exercise in that way as dogs.

Hi, I have completed the survey for you and I understand where your son is coming from but this idea would not be practical for a guinea pig and would be dangerous for them. Guinea pigs have fragile backs and a guinea pig could seriously hurt themselves using a product like this.

It is true that guinea pigs require exercise but they prefer to just roam around in a large open space and flop down when they've had enough.

Few guinea pigs actually play with 'toys' and would much rather chew things (such as cardboard boxes) and hide in and under things.

May be your son could think about designing something along those lines instead :)

To exercise a pig in this way is dangerous And verging cruel i understand your sons intentions but maybe he could look into designing something to out piggys veggys in so they have to work at getting to them to keep them stimulated?

I don't think he's really going to make it. :)) He just had to come up with an idea? :p
Yes, it's just an idea, then he has to gather marketing info and make a prototype to show his idea. It's not going to be produced/sold. Thanks for all your help!

if it makes him feel any better for a GCSE technology assignment I had to design some kind of light sensor, back then I had a hamster so I invented, designed and built a sensored light that would come on when the hamster was awake at night - only of course hamsters are nocturnal and wouldnt want a light on but that is not the point, its the process of the whole thing that is the most important thing.

I think its fabulous that he wants to design something for guinea pigs and every great inventor comes up with some daft ones, it helps bring out the great ones.

Good luck with his project! I remember concocting the weirdest things in my projects! haha

I invented a large tube which went from the top stairs to the bottom ending in a box at the bottom which when he went into it would set off a pully system which would lift him to the top again. Needless to say it didn't really work and I had a hamster stuck in a box half way up the stairs!
Plus market research is about working out whether or not ideas are suitable!
