Emergency: my piggie is very weak not eating I'm sringing him water and he cannot stand walk or lift his head and he keeps jolting I there are thing I can do? I have managed to feed him some food and have given him a hot bath thank you ( we rang the vets but they asked £100 for a consultation) xx

I'm so sorry to hear about Octavius but, as @helen105281 has already advised you, he needs to be seen by a vet.

I notice that you got him from Pets at Home - have you contacted their veterinary team - Vets 4 Pets?

We rant then there was a number on the carrier I was given him in the said it will cost unless we got him two weeks ago x

He needs to see the vet tonight if possible but if not then yes take him tomorrow, however, I am not sure he will make it until then.

@Octavius The People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) has low cost or no cost veterinary care, including emergency care. Look them up on the net and use their search box to find one of their emergency clinics within a 25 mile radius of you. They have emergency clinics at low cost or no cost depending on your situation.
The Royal Society for the Protection Against Cruelty to Animals RSPCA also has free and low cost vet clinics, emergency as well as regular. Find one of their emergency clinics and take your piggy there now. It needs immediate help

you need to take him now. there is no other option. ask to pay later, don't tell them until he's been seen, just do whatever. this is his life we are talking about. :(

It was too late we had friends who had this happen and the vets put them down plus it's late and we didn't have the car. Unfortunately octavius passed away during the night.

I am so sorry to hear this. I hope poor Octavius is at peace now.

So sorry to hear about little octavius. Your right he's not in pain now. Sending you hugs x

Thank you I don't think I will the forum, I would love to still have a guinea pig maybe later on x

This must have been a horrible experience for you and I am glad that it hasn't put you off keeping pets. However, the most important thing to remember from this experience is that pets sometimes get sick and need veterinary treatment. Please promise me that you will make provision for this if you get another pet. Some forum members have a separate savings account . I have got mine insured. Some use charities to help.

We have a charity near us which provides cheap or free animal and it happens that one of my parents had the car in Manchester (6 hours drive) so we couldn't take him but we will defiately have more precautions in the future x

I am so sorry you lost your boy. I can only agree with what everyone else says, pets can be very costly when ill. I have spent £1700 on one if my guinea pig's vets bills :( Although the PDSA help people on benefits you cannot be certain they will pay all your vet bills. If you consider getting guinea pigs in the future you need to make sure you are able to pay for emergency vet care too. It sounds harsh but it is better than letting any animal suffer. Guinea pigs are better in pairs as they prefer their own company, so that means you need to be prepared to spend money on 2. I have 2 piggies that have seen the vet in the last 6 weeks, one is insured luckily as it had to have an operation that cost £400. Hopefully with all this information it will prepare you better for any future pets.

pets don't always become ill at times convenient to us unfortunately, but as their owners, we need to have a plan in place to make sure we can do whatever is needed whenever it is needed. sometimes pts is the best option to prevent pain and suffering.

it's a tough learning curve and we have all had them.

i am very sorry he passed away. sleep peacefully little one. x
