Hi all I need help!
Deliah our guniea pig is acting very strange.
She is refusing to move from one corner of her cage pooing and weeing and just sitting in it. This is totally out of character for her! She was also lifting her back legs up almost like she was nesting? She's not preg neither.
She is eating and drinking as normal but if you tease her with her all time favourite cucumber she refuses to move from her spot in the corner.
We have got her out currently to cleaned her soiled cage and is refusing to move from under the stool .... Having a few poos which she never does out of her cage!
Any ideas what's wrong with her.x

I'm not the best to offer you health support, I'm sure wiebke Helen or pebbles will pick up your thread ASAP though, I will watch to see if you get a reply.

you need to take her to an exotics/guinea savvy vet. whereabouts are you? hopefully someone can recommend a vet for you.

just to add - please don't delay taking her to a vet asap. any change in behaviour like this is serious and she needs to be seen as soon as possible. x

If I'm right in thinking Helen and other monitors get email/text alerts when someone posts a thread on the illness and pregnancy pages and I know Helen if free picks up her tags ASAP she will soon reply, but please contact your nearest savvy vet for advice and appointment.

if you don't mind travelling, then ashleigh vets in whalley range manchester is excellent. x

eta: ashleigh vets have three exotics vets now. aidan (highly recommended), michelle and shiva x

Sorry at work so just posting on phone. Glad you have an appointment and hope the vet can help.

I know its a worry when you come on here and ask for advice and people say get to the vets ASAP, as that often means paying out money you didn't except to spend, but it's best they are checked over by a vet in such a case.

Fingers firmly crossed! Glad that you have got an appointment.

A piggy that is stuck in a corner with their face to the wall is one very ill piggy; the sooner you can get it seen, the greater the chance of it pulling through.

Please keep a beady eye on her and weigh her daily at the same time of the feeding cycle for the time being. It was hopefully just a one off, but it is better to be safe than sorry. This is what I do with any of my own piggies I am worried about.

maybe she had some gas which was making her uncomfortable, which has now passed. keep a close eye on her and hopefully it was a one off. i'm so glad you took her to the vets. i've read alot of posts over the years where people don't, and sadly have a bad outcome. :(

cuddles to your little girl x

I agree it could have been gas making her uncomfortable. Just keep an eye on her over the next few days and check she is eating and pooing ok.

Well Delilah still isn't right. She's still acting strange refusing to move from certain spots in her cage.
She wouldn't go near her fresh veggies and fruit which she LOVES but would happily be hand fed and eat hay.
We popped her ontop of her bed where she sleeps as her cage was soaked with wee which she was getting soaked in! (Which we cleaned)
She perked up a bit eating her dried food and we put some veggies on top and hay so she could reach easily.
If she is no better tomorrow we are taking her back the vets!

Sorry to hear that - I would call the vet you saw yesterday and say there has been no improvement. If they're unhelpful maybe try getting a second opinion elsewhere.

The fact she is sitting in her wee and has gone off her veg suggests she isn't well, poor little thing.

Sounds like it could be urinary tract problem, infection ,bladder stones etc. Sounds as though she is in pain . Is she squeaking when weeing?

The fact that she is not moving/sitting in her pee and is not eating properly means that something is not right. Has your vet checked her urine for blood yesterday? I would also suspect that she is in a fair amount of pain.

It might be advisable to get a second opinion. We have got a piggy savvy UK vets locator on the top bar.

I now think she has bloat. I held her away from me flicked her stomach and it's a thud hollow like noise. So off she goes again :( regardless of me doing that though I was going to take her back today xx

we took her to a piggie savvy vet yesterday! She has an appt today neways.

Good luck with todays appointment. The behaviour does fit with it being bloat. Your vet will need to xray to check there is not a blockage and they may then give gut stimulants. I also recommend massage therapy with either an electric toothbrush or on massage pad if you have one. If she has gas then Gripe water can help, as can Dioralyte. She will also need a good dose of pain relief.
