Hi

I've just joined the Forum today in the hope that someone can give me some advice - although I kind of know I'm clutching at straws.

I rescued two Piggy's a few years ago (I think it was 4) and they were already adults, we called them Pickle and Chutney. Sadly, Chutney died last year so we got two babies to keep him company, they all get on very well.

I have noticed in the last few days to a week that Pickle has gone down hill. He has always come to the door every night to get his greens, whereas the others are a bit more nervous and get theirs once we have moved back from the cage, he hasn't done this for some days. His eyes seem to be closing up and have discharge (doesn't appear to be green or yellow) around his eyes, he has lost alot of weight and his fur has gone patchy. He seems to be walking about OK and was eating the grass when I put them out yesterday.

I have made an appointment with the vet this afternoon and have prepared myself for the worst but I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this with their Guinea Pigs, young or old, or knows what it may be...I did notice that Chronic Renal Failure has some of these symptoms.

First of all catnicki, is he eating anything? Piggies can lose a lot of weight and become dehydrated very quickly.
 
How old is he? you mention that you got him 4 years ago and that he was already an adult at that point. Sad as it is he might just be getting old?

Sorry cant help, apart from the odd cold my piggies havent got ill yet.
Sounds like he's got something in his eye, and the hair loss could be mites.
Make sure your going to a good vet as some vets dont know what they're talking about when it comes to small animals ::)

I've not seen him drinking as much as he was, he is quite often at the bottle, I have seen him eating a few pellets and some grass.

I think he must be about 6 now, so if it is old age then I can cope with that, just don't want him suffering.

I've just changed vets, all they ever seem to do is give Piggy's antibiotics at the old vets I was at, my Mum has always gone to the new ones so I'm hoping they will be better.

I've just got back from the vets and sadly had to have Pickle put down. :'(

The vet was lovely and did say we could try him on a painkiller to see if he starts eating and picks up but said he believed his kidneys had failed so it would just buy us a few more days and if it was one of his Piggy's he would put it to sleep.

Oh I'm really sorry for your loss :'( you must have looked after him well he lived to a good age. RIP Pickle x

Sorry for your loss Nicki. :'(

I lost my piggie Graham to renal failure earlier this year. I didnt have him put to sleep, and decided to syringe feed him and get injections from the vet. I was warned it might not work. He died a day later and I think he was suffering for the last couple of hours. I definitely think you did the right thing.
