I'm so scared. I bought my guinea pigs from pets at home and all the staff where really knowledgeable and the guinea pigs are healthy. I'm scared though because everyone says pet stores are bad and that they will get health problems. They were only at pets at home for 4 days is this bad? how do I avoid them getting ill ?

Don't be scared, there is a lot of bad things said about pet shops. People are sold sick or pregnant sows. But I've had 12 from that pet chain. One had to be PTS because of a tumour, but I doubt that was anything to do with the store. This forum supports rescues because it saves piggies that have been abandoned, or ill treated. Or maybe bought in because the person couldn't care for them anymore.
Now stop worrying take them to the vet, for a ROUTINE health check & to register them.

By the way I forgot to say enjoy, your pliggies, we'd love to have pictures when they have settled. What have you called. them, are they babies. We are always here to give you advice. The only thing is maybe, the cage is too small which is a possibility if they have sold you one. What are the dimensions of it. If it is too small we can recommend an alternative

Welcome to the forum!

Try not to worry about your pigs. I've had pigs from Pets at Home in the past and they were fine.

I'm a bit of a worrier too, so whenever I get a new pig I always book them in with my guinea pig specialised vet for a health check. They'll spot anything that is a problem. It doesn't cost that much and I always like to have a bit of peace of mind.

where should I post some pics? x thank you

My first two piggies were from Pets at home because I didn't know rescues existed - I still have one of those piggies and she is nearly 8 and has been pretty healthy all her life.

thank you xx was she healthy to begin with ? Xx

Please don't worry, most piggies from pet shops are healthy. You will always hear of the ones that aren't because that is when people ask for help. It is like a negative review thing... you always see more bad reviews of things than good because people are more likely to complain than to praise

How many piggies do you have and what are their names?

My current two piggies came from the Pets at Home adoption section, and they are two very lively little hooligans. No two Pets at Home stores are the same and I have no doubt that there are many employees there who do their damnedest for the animals in their care and both present and future pet owners. There's a lot that places like P@H could do better, certainly, but it definitely isn't the case that all animals purchased there are going to be ill or sickly.

I would second getting registered with a vet and having a general wellness checkup though. I do it with every new piggy I bring home. I know I probably don't need to, but to me it just makes sense. Vets are there to help after all, and as a new owner actually bringing an animal home can be terrifying no matter how much research you do beforehand. A little bit of reassurance can go a long, long way.

Lovely names, the cage size is fine for two also :)

Be lovely to see pigtures of them once they have settled :)

i am going to move your thread to Guinea Pig Chat as it isn't a health problem, it just frees this section up in case any emergencies arrive :)

sorry I didn't realize. I'm new to this I'm so sorry x

Most of my herd are from P&H, mostly from the adoption section. Except my oldest two, Poppy and Smudge who were dropped off and left on my doorstep.

And I wouldn't change any of them for anything. They are the funniest, cutest, adorable and, um, demanding lot of piggies ever. Rescues are, of course, fabulous.

I bought my piggies from P@H and they had a free health check after 10 days at Vets for Pets which is their in store vet.

My first pig, long ago, named Ugo, came from a shop (at that time there weren't pc at home and internet). He had a good health, but wrong habits about the food; he used to eat only pellets and some carrots. Luckily he learnt eating grass, but eating all that dry food caused him troubles... Now I have two piggies adopted from a shelter whose vet guaranteed me about their right diet and in fact the difference is huge with poor Ugo. Anyway, don't worry, your piggies are healthy and in case of bad habits I hope they will not be as stubborn as my Ugo...:hb:
