I have just put George and Alfie back in their cage after floor time, and have noticed something abit strange. They have a bag of grass to eat on the floor, and have noticed a puddle of pinky, red wee inside the bag.

I have never seen any of this before, the only red thing that they eat is tomato, and they haven't had any since first thing.

It is worrying me sick, if anyone has any idea what could be causing this, PLEASE let me know. :...:...
 
I'm not sure but could it just be that it is a little bit of concentrated urine!
Maybe because its on the grass, you can see it more and it is usually absorbed by the straw/shavings or newspaper! Hope that made sense!
 
The wee is on clear plastic, they pee lots on their newspaper and it always looks cloudy, but this time it is definately red. I really don't like the look of it x:...
 
I can Imagine how worried you are,If In doubt maybe bed them down for the night on a white towel so as you can see exactly what colour you are dealing with. It might be worth checking that they don't have any hay stuck In their private parts (granted not a pleasant job but one that needs to be done regularly with boars) Obviously If there Is remove It. If you see another Instance of bloody urine then do go to the vets.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge than I will be along shortly.
 
If it is blood then it could be a sign of internal stones irritating the lining of their waterworks (I think), or it could be an infection - was it bright red? If so then the piggy needs to go to a vet. Keep an eye on them - are they squeaking or lifting themselves up when they wee?
Are you sure there wasn't a red-coloured bit of food that they weed on and the colour has come out in the wee?
 
I have checked their bits and pieces, and pulled out some hair and not much else. It's just sucha worry when I haven't seen anything like this before, as I have said, their wee is always cloudy. They are on white vet bed, so if anything comes up during the night, I should be able to see in the morning, thank you for getting in touch so quickly x
 
Are they squeaking or squealing when they pee, or in obvious discomfort? Is it definately pink, red or with obvious red streaks?

GP urine apparently oxidises on contact with the air so it can often turn an unpleasant reddy-orange to orangy-brown colour, which can often inspire panic.

Try not to worry just yet (although I understand completely how concerned you are). These things can be easily tested for at the vets and detected. I'm sure someone who has had experience of this will be on soon to give better advice than mine!
 
Please don't think I am trying to scare you but cloudy wee Is also not a great sign It can mean they have been receiving too much calcium in their diet. If you can try and determine which of the boys It Is and withdraw calcium rich foods.

My thought would either be urine infection or bladder stones which my sow had. In herself she was fine and still ran around the floor, eating and pooping normally. The only sign was reddish colour in her urine.
 
I would imagine it could be a urine infection which usually requires anti biotics from the vet. If the boys are running around/eating as normal/behaving normally then try not to worry too much, but is probably a good idea to take them to the vet
 
I have just checked out their vet bed and I can only see a couple of tiny pinky spots on there. They are tucking in to their breakfast and came charging over to as soon as went over to them! Should I still take them to the vets today to be on the safe side? x
 
I think your right, I shall get on the phone as soon as they open, can't do any harm to get them the once over. xx:)

This is not the case at all, a degree of cloudy urine is completely normal. Some guineas ALWAYS have cloudy pee.

It's if the urine leaves white, gritty deposits behind that you need to worry.
 
If the deposits once dried are smooth then no worries there but lay off high calcium foods or just reduce them. My motto is everything in moderation. I've had lots of smooth white deposits never gritty ones. :)
 
Thank you for all your reply's. I have just spoken to my vet and he has assured me that this is normal. They both seem well in themselves, happy, eating and pooing lots! It was just abit alarming to see wee of that colour.
There has never been any gritty deposits in their wee, which is good!:)
 
Hmm well, I don't really think it's normal. I'm surprised your vet said that :S
I've dealt with this before, My boy Ozzy had red wee and was wet underneath on and off.
It could either be bladder stones or a urinary tract infection. We gave Ozzy antibiotics and it cleared up, he was never very well though and he passed away from tooth problems I believe.
If I were you I'd get it checked again, you could wait to see if they pass any more blood in the urine though. Hope you can get it sorted :) xx
 
I tend to agree with Velvet Smoke, red wee isn't normal and I would only expect to see this if perhaps the pigs had eaten some red pepper or something similar (had red wee in a rabbit once when it had eaten lots of dandelions, but not seen this is pigs). In all my years of keeping pigs the only time I've seen red urine is when a pig has bladder stones or an infection :( - for peace of mind I would get a good vet to check the guys out.

I have ummed an arred about what to do, but have made an appointment at the vets, they will be going at 9.30am. Fingers crossed, all will be fine, hopefully I am worry about nothing xx:)
 
I tend to agree that red in the urine indicates a possible infection, so you are doing the right thing. Septrin is the antibotic of choice if the vet decides to be on the safe side and prescribe one.

Well, the redness is the urine seems to have stopped, but George is still getting in a wet mess underneath, so I think its for the best to get him checked out. The lady at my local rescue recommended a good vet, and suggested taking a urine sample down, just to make sure there isn't anything more sinister going on.

Well, we've just come back from the vets. They have checked Georges urine sample and found a very small trace of blood. There is also a possibility of cystitis, so he has been given some anitbiotics, 2.5ml of Baytril, twice a day for the next 5 days. She has also given us a sachet of Bio-Lapis pro biotic to give him when the Baytril is finished.

So fingers crossed, this will clear things up, if not, the next step would have to be an X-ray, to check for stones.

Hopefully the meds will clear away the infection and George will feel better soon xx
