Eric is sick. He's been losing weight and tonight I've weighed him and he's 1080g. He was 1300g 3 weeks ago, so this is a lot. Now I can see that he has loose wet poos. I've given some critical care and put some pro biotic in his water. I have some baytril left from 2 weeks ago when he had a respiratory infection. Should I give him some now or wait until I see the vet tomorrow. He's losing weight so quickly :-( He seems alright in himself but there's obviously something badly wrong. I can't stop crying, I really couldn't bare to lose him. He's getting old at 4.5 years though.

Can someone advise me please. Should I bring him in this house or would this upset him? He's in a hutch in the garage with his friend currently.

bring him inside,if you can, keep him warm and comfortable, keep his veggies to a minimum and increase hay amount and give fresh water. get him to an emergency vet tomorrow am if possible

If you do bring him in bring his friend aswell, fingers and paws here crossed for you xx

I'll bring him and his pal in straight away, thank you :-) I was just worried about bringing him into a warm house when he's been outside.

I can get him to a vet first thing tomorrow. It's one thing after another for the poor little thing just now. He had mites weeks ago, then the respiratory infection and now this.

How long was he on Baytril for with the respiratory infection? Did he lose weight during his other health troubles? It sounds like his immune system is down at the moment - maybe to do with age, maybe not.

Let us know how he gets on at the vet, it's definitely the right thing to do, getting him checked over. *Hugs* to you. It's awful when our piggies get ill, especially when its one thing after another. x

I would stop all veggies/fruit completely for a couple of days because of his soft poos. I wouldn't put the probiotic in his water bottle as he might be put off drinking that water (taste). I personally wouldn't give him anymore baytril as you don't know what is cauing the weight loss. I would definately pop him to the vets tomorrow morning. Hope this helps and let us know how you get on.

Thank you so much for all your advice. I don't know what I'd do without you on this forum. Vet couldn't find anything untoward and thinks it's probably Eric's age and his body not processing food so well these days. I'm to keep giving pro-biotic and critical care for time being and monitor his weight. I've reduced his veg right down and am not even giving the odd treat of apple etc. He's still happy and alert so I'll just keep a close eye. I think he and Badger are happier at being indoors too (hubby says they can stay in, phew!) Poor guy must feel like he's under a microscope just now as I keep going to look at him. Thank you all sooo sooo much again :)

Aren't we lucky to have understanding other halfs - mind you after 30 odd years mine knows when he's onto a loser!
If you are cutting down on his veggies you should perhaps consider giving him a vitamin C supplement - I use the chewable 500mg vitamin C tablets you can buy at the chemists and give a 1/4 tablet a day. To make sure he gets it I would crush and dissolve in a little water and give with a syringe.
Vitamin C can often give poorly piggies a boost and you can't overdose.

Thank you Sue, I hadn't thought of that. I have some vit c tablets. I will give him some tonight. He was so good this morning, I had him sat on my lap and he was taking the critical care from the syringe willingly for a bit. He must like the taste. I weighed him this morning and he'd put on 10g. My hubby told me off for weighing him again and said I shouldn't be doing it every day as I'm getting paranoid. I know he's probably right, but I'm just worried.

I'm sorry love i've just seen your thread...........:(:(
All my love and healing wheeeeeeeeeeks for the little guy and you too xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

Now sweetie, i used to do a daily weigh........but only cause of a sick piggie
You have decide how often, but i'd advise weekly would normally be enough!

ahhhhhhhhhhh i hope he perks up soon, perhaps a change of 'scenery' will do this for him (maybe he hated outside......shhhhhhh don't tell anyone else..)

Loves to you all xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

He's doing well still. He's so perky and normal in himself it's almost unbelievable that anything's wrong even. His poos don't seem as loose as yesterday and I'm encouraged by him weighing an extra 10g in today. I'm just hoping that he's been stressed over the last few weeks what with getting mites and that I can fix him.

Glynis, I really think he does prefer being inside with us, so I'm going to keep him in. My OH spent £200 on two Lavendar hutches plus the hutch huggers from PAH but is being so good about it bless him.

I'm at work right now, but OH is at home and checking on him. I can't wait to get home and cuddle him and feed him some more CC. I'm on a mission to fatten him back up :)

Thank you all for your positive thoughts and wishes x
