Hello i am new here any way i have two guinea pigs called chip and dale i got them a week before easter and they were born on pancake day 09, and when i just went out to check on my rabbit well i heard a sneaze and then 4 mins later another one are they jelous of me spending time with my rabbit they are in seprate cages and they did squeak or is it just the wind that makes them squeak. Anway this morning before i pulled the sacks off there cage(thats to keep them warm at night and the wind wont go in there cage) there was lots of squeaks what is it were they hungry i gave them some food then they stopped or was it because they were hungry but the squeaks were nothing about that and they probly cant squeak when they eat. Please tell me if any of this is bad thank you x

piggies squeak for different reasons but as they knew you were about they were probably squeaking for food or attention dont worry it is perfectly normal

It sounds asthough they were squeaking to be fed, as soon as my back door goes mine go into a chorus of squeaking :))

i have notice with freddie and basil has soon has the back door goes they run onto there landing and start squeaking because they know foods coming .x) :rose

If your piggies didn't squeak i would be worried.

Mine go MAD when they hear the fridge open - or when they hear me coming downstairs - or when they hear me pulling up grass - or when i open the door - or when i rip a cabbage leaf off - or when i pull hay out the bag - or for any other reason (normally food related!) It's not that they are particularly hungry, they are just eating machines!

My new one (Tulip) seems to squeak when i open a bar of chocolate! It's like having a little conscience in the room, telling me i shouldn't be eating it!

... and i shouldn't worry too much about the sneezes - just keep an eye on them. They may have got a bit of hay up their nose !

If they have running, sticky eyes and/or nose, it may be something - but i wouldn't worry about sneezes alone. If they are poorly they will stop eating. If my piggies ever stop eating i take it very seriously.

That said - i am by no means an expert when it comes to piggies illness - so i'm sure someone with more knowledge will reply to you

Sneezes could be a reaction to the hay or the beginning of an Upper Respiratory Infection. If you are concerned, or either of your pigs is showing signs of becoming unwell, then you should take them into the vet who will prescribe them with an antibiotic that is often taken for ten days to clear up the infection.

To prevent a URI you should ensure that your piggies are warm enough during the day and night and that damp or wet bedding is removed as soon as possible. Also, dusty bedding could make them sneeze - you may wish to switch to a less dusty bedding such as Carefresh. One of my pigs use to sneeze of pine shavings (very bad for piggies!), then I found out that pine is bad for guinea pig and switched them to Carefresh (then later Megazorb which is cheaper ;)) and he stopped.

no one on here can tell you whether your pigs were squeaking because they were hungry or not. that's part of getting to know them and what they're saying to you.
i'd advise you to do some research quickly as you've obviously not studied them before you bought them and this isn't a good sign that you're getting worried and fabricating problems about their basic communication.

Before I got george I thought I had done the research as I had read three books on the them which I had bought and read them several times over. Unfortunately the books weren't that great and didn't answer all the questions that followed.

Don't worry you are in the right place. You will get some good advice here!

Take time to read up on the bedding types in the housing thread and the different veggies and food you should be feeding them.

To me it sounds as if they were expecting food and were excited so don't worry! The sneezing may be an issue so keep an eye on them and see how frequent it is. If they are bedded on shavings this could be the problem and you should remove these asap and replace with an alternative listed on the housing section. I had George on shavings when I first got him due to bad advice from pet shop and it did make him sneeze more than he does now!

Good luck x

Ok

Well i did read a lot before i got them but thank you anyway they squeaked again this morning then stop while chewing on cabbage haha byeeee x
