My 3yr old guinea pig had a sebaceous cyst burst on tuesday night, the vet gave us baytril incase of infection as it left a large hole on her shoulder area. She has been fine until today which is the 5th day of giving her baytril.

She wont eat her dried food, just veg and this is very slowly, she sits in the corner doing nothing for ages.Shes just not herself, seems dopey.Could this be the effects of the antibiotics or something else? Thanks for reading.

You need to be flushing the wound with salt water to clean it,
If she is having this much trouble eating i think you should syringe feed,
Puree some pellets or critical care if you have it as that will help.
Is she eating hay?
Dopey does not seem right at all i have used Baytril a few times with no effects like this,
Baytril is also hard on the stomach so she needs to be having probiotics.
Teeth issues may be of concern regarding the slow eating,
I would recommend getting her back to the vet as it doesnt sound right to me.
x

thanks for the replys. No the vet just gave me baytril to give her no mention of anything else, should he of done?Shes eating little bits of hay not much at all tho.I was told to leave the wound alone so it would heal over.

the thing is if you arent cleaning out the puss it will probably reoccur,it needs to be clean then allowed to heal over to prevent it happening again.
The vet should have told you to give probiotics, the easiest and yuckiest way is to get some poo's from a healthy piggy(if you have one) and mash it up mixed with veg and then syringe feed it,
I would get your pig back to the vet just in case or if you can find anyone near you experienced with piggies that would be good.
you can try to call or text Vedra from the Cambridge cavy trust she is great with pigs and I'm sure someone on here will have her number x

Thankyou very much for you're help, ill try that.It makes me cross sometimes that i trust what the vet says then find it wasnt the best thing to do.

no problems,
Your vet didnt do anything wrong i dont think they just left some info out which is not easy on the owner so i can understand where your coming from,i hope all goes well for your piggy, make sure you keep us updated x

In my experience of removing sebaceous cysts the greater majority heal with no problem. This includes those cases where the removal of the cyst can leave an open wound. Usually by day 6 or 7 the wound has "skinned over" and the hole "fills up" so that after a couple of weeks everything is as good as new.
Whilst I can understand why your vet gave the pig an antibiotic just in case of an infection, there is an equal but counter argument that antibiotics should not be used until there is an infection.
I would not have thought that the Baytril has had an adverse effect.
However, I do wonder if she were given a general anaesthetic?

As far as the use of probiotics go, I think the necessity varies from pig to pig. Probably the bigger pigs will handle antibiotics better than the small ones - when Ben had his abscess, he had four weeks of antibiotics without the need for any probiotics. The vet told me that as long as his poos were still normal, then his gut was functioning fine and didn't need any help. He is a 3 pounder though so he has more gut than most to handle it!:))

Molly seems alot better today, she is more lively and eating her food again.Should i still give her the poo mixture as a probiotic?
