Hi I have 2 boar guinea pigs and one of them managed to escape last night in the house somewhere, we have hunted everywhere left food out and can't find any traces of him anywhere:( it's like he got out of the house or something.
I am very upset and so are my children we have been looking for him all day today and still no sign.
Could do with some reassuring advice on how to hunt him out or when to give up looking for him and accept he's gone for good ? :(
I can't stop crying about him, he's a cheeky chappy about 7 year old, thought he would have showed himself by now :(

Do you have a carry case? Perhaps you could put some of his favourite food (parsley maybe?) In that. With a nice soft blanket, somewhere in a corner and see if he comes back to it.

If you can get to a DIY shop and buy a HUMANE trap that could work...
I've used one to catch lost hamsters... But if I'm honest I've never lost a piggie... I think Connie has a good idea... Atleast you'll know he's eating if you do that...
Good luck... I'll keep you in my thoughts and I really hope he comes back soon...

Does he respond to any noises....like rustling plastic bags (mine loooove that noise and wheek if they hear it) ..... if so might be worth a try.
Also agree with Connie above about putting out food and hidey place / carry case / house
Good luck

Left a box lined with fleece blanket last night and pieces of cucumber in it, he hasn't touched it.

Haven't heard him make a sound :( it's like he's vanished :(

When do we give up the search? do we leave food and bedding in every room just in case? at the moment the box is in the living room but he'd have to get through the kitchen to get there, also is there anywhere in the kitchen I should be checking? I've looked behind my dryer and in the dryer hose there's no room behind the fridge for him to squeeze into or at least I don't think so, how small a gap can they squeeze through?

I wouldnt give up at this stage. I would try leaving food, beds in any room he could have got into. Could he have made it outside ? Would be worth checking under bushes etc if that is a possibility...

Oh no, how awful :( Can only suggest what someone else already has, the plastic bag. Usually gets their attention.
Could he be trapped somewhere ?
Oh hun, don't know what to say - would you be able to ring the RSPCA or a rescue for more advice ?
Hope he comes back soon and please keep us updated.

Let your neighbours know to keep an eye out just incase. Try leaving his favourite food and a warm hidey in a box of some kind. If that fails then maybe try a humane trap where the door closes when triggered. Good luck I hope you manage to get your piggle back :( xx

Hi,

which room was he in when he went missing?

They can squeeze through very small gaps, my male piggie managed to squeeze out of his run once and the gap was tiny and he is a big boy:(

I would look in every room checking under and behind everything, taking care not to move things to fast as you may hurt him by mistake.

Is there any gaps in the walls or anything he might have escaped too?

We checked outside this morning, if he got out there last night he's no chance with the cats and foxes around here. It's the not knowing that's killing me inside :(

food is boring, if i saw a hotdog on the floor and i was hiding i probably wouldn't go for it, but if it were a pile of candy, I'd go nuts. Try hay! and look for "little gifts"... you know. :p My pigs really like getting inbehind or underneath things so try looking behind couches, underneath beds tables, etc. It's probaby not outside of your house unless you keep the doors wide open for lengthy amounts of time. and they don't climb well or at least I imagine they don't. Maybe try using your other guinea pig as a bloodhound and let it out of the cage and see where it goes, he could lead you to the other. I had something similar happen with my rabbit, and i spent hours looking for him, so I feel your pain.

Good luck!

We've searched high and low, under and behind almost everything!
Got work in an hour so will keep you updated if we find him. Thanks for all your responses so far :)

Is there any way he could have gone outside? Was there a door open?

Really sorry to hear your piggie has gone missing. Can't offer much more advice than what has already been suggested. Hope he comes out of hiding soon x

oh dear this is awful, i think it is a good idea to let the other piggie out, he might take you straight to him x good luck x i too would be worried sick .

sorry to hear you haven't found him:( it may be possible then he has got out via an open door, have you got a cat flap he could have gone through?

Perhaps leave food overnight outside like a carrot or piece of veg and see if it's gone in the morning.

I am sorry that youve lost your piggie :(

How big is your house?

Could he have got outside? If theres no way he could have got out of an open door/window then you know he is definitely in the house somewhere....Look for poop, seriously thats what I would be looking for.

Good luck

Ok if it were me I'd start at one end of the house and work your way through the entire house, pulling out furniture etc and checking every imaginable place as you go. Have a carrier bag and keep rustling it, you never know if he's hiding somewhere the sound might make him wheek. If his cage was downstairs check the upstairs too, I know some pigs manage to climb stairs.

Good luck x

yes, I think your right there is a good chance that he may have gone up the stairs, my piggies can jump onto a box which is higher than a stair so it's possible he may be in one of the bedrooms i you haven't checked already:)

You could try putting out something like a shoe box as mine love hiding away in things like that if they are not sure about their surroundings.
Really hope you find your piggy soon xx

sorry to hear you lost a piggie.....I lost a hamster once....it lived inside my sofa...yes inside! lol for about 3 weeks it made itself a lovely home in the upholstory! it eventually came out and we used a trap ( a previous poster recommended that too) ....fingers crossed for you x

It does sound like your pig may have got out of the house as otherwise I'm almost sure you would have heard something. Maybe you could also set up something outside so that if he is still around out there, he could have some shelter and food.
Don't give up.
