Hi please could I get advice and help for my guinea pig. He is only a couple of months old I think, I bought him around Xmas time. Since then I have had to take him to the vets 6 times as he has had infections and due to a prolapse had to have an operation. Vets treated him by giving antibiotics but have said that he has colitis - inflamed intestines and anything can trigger this getting worse. I was told that there isn't anything that can be given apart from the antibiotics because other medication may damage his kidneys. I'm worried because each time he finishes his antibiotics he is okay a few days and then ill again. I've tried everything - stopped using wood shavings as that was irritating it, stopped paper bedding as he kept eating it, stopped giving carrots or treat sticks and he is kept now on blankets in his cage and gets the same hay and food with vitamin c each day. Please help as he seems to have a rare condition and I don't know what else to try! Thanks!

Hi, sorry to hear you're having a difficult time with your piggy. Sorry I can't offer any advice but I'm sure someone will be along soon who can.

Good luck x

What a terrible situation! Does your vet have a special interest in guinea pigs? If not you may gain something by getting a specialist second opinion. Sorry I can't be of more help :(

Can you tell us where you are in the country as we may be able to recommend another vet, but you havent entered your location on your details

Thanks

Sorry your having such a worry with the poor little thing, I had vet visits a week after I got my baby guinea pig however he didnt need no where near as much as yours. They can be such a worry.

Only thing I would say is to bring him indoors if he isn't already and giving him lots of gentle fuss :) Give him lots of piggy hugs to make him feel better, and one from me :)

I have no experience with having piggies that has what your one has but theres lots of experienced piggy keepers on here so you will get lots of advice and help :) I would definatly recomend getting a 2nd oppion from a cavy savy vet if your vet isn't.

Hope the wittle one gets better soon x

I'm so sorry to hear that. I wish I could help you, but I have not personally experienced that before, nor have any of my friends who have guinea pigs. Hope your little piggy get better soon.

oh dear, the poor little boy has been through so much. Do you know if your vets are specialists in dealing with exotics? If not it might be worth finding out about one locally for a second opinion on what this little guys life is likely to be like. Specialists tend to be more knowledgeable and ready to use different antibiotics/medicines to treat guinea pigs than the non cavy savvy vets.

It is very rare for piggies to get colitis - however they do get ileus - if a vet uses the word colitis then I think you need to get a second opinion from a cavy savvy vet.
The treatment for colitis and ileus are dfifent and it sounds to me like your piggie needs some ileus treatment (metoclopromide or cisapride and/or zantac/rantidine) pronto....plues you need to syringe feed with softened/mushed pellets/critical care to make sure they are getting enough food into their guts each day.

whereabouts are you in the country? You may have to travel but I gurantee it;s worth it to see a aavy savvy vet.

x
