Hi please could I get advice and help for my guinea pig. He is only a couple of months old I think. Since then I have had to take him to the vets 6 times as he has had infections and due to a prolapse had to have an operation. Vets treated him by giving antibiotics but have said that he has colitis - inflamed intestines and anything can trigger this.

I was told that there isn't anything that can be given apart from the antibiotics because other medication may damage his kidneys. I'm worried because each time he finishes his antibiotics he is okay a few days and then ill again. I've tried everything - stopped using wood shavings as that was irritating it, stopped paper bedding as he kept eating it, stopped giving carrots or treat sticks and he is kept now on blankets in his cage and gets the same hay and food with vitamin c each day. Please help as he seems to have a rare condition and I don't know what else to try! Thanks!

Where are you located Julie? We can advise you see a cavy savvy vet as sometimes vets don't necessarily know about the treatment of guinea pigs. Can you describe his symptoms to us? What antibiotics is he on? Sounds like he's had a hard life so far poor mite.
xx

Ditto PiggiePal. Not all vets know that much about guinea pigs and not all antibiotics are the same when it comes to guinea pigs. Please let us know your general area as someone may be able to recommend an exotic vet ( they will know a lot more about guinea pigs ) fairly close to you.
