My Guinea Pig, Rusty, has a hard lump just under his chin. i have no idea what it is but I'm worried sick. Its probably about the size of a malteeser but he's only a baby so it seems huge on him! Its really hard and he wont let us look at it. He just bit my partner when he tried to touch it.

I'm so worried. Our trip to the vets tomorrow will be the second this week. Our other guinea pig is being treated for ringworm - i dont know if this could be related.

Any help as to what it could be would be greatly appreciated. We're still new to keeping piggies and will never again buy any animal from a pet store!

Hi

Sorry you're coming to the forum under these circumstances. What a worry

Firstly ringworm is unconnected with Rusty's lumps.

It's good you're going to the vet - his lumps could be anything from cervical lymphadenitis (an infection of the lymph nodes in the head/neck) to bites from fighting with his partner and other causes.

The most important thing is to ensure you have a piggie-savvy vet to treat your pigs. Whereabouts are you in the country (nearest big town will do)?

Wigan - if you know where that is

we've not had him too long either - not even a month.
he's from P@H and i think its safe to say after the week ive had with the boys at the vets i will never step foot in that place again!

OK - I'll now expand on the last post.

Tomorrow the vet should stick a needle into the lump and withdraw some contents to analyse. This will hlep determine if it is an abcess, fatty lump, cyst or something that needs further investigation . A General Anaesthetic shouldn't be ncessary for this stage of the process.

If the vet doesn;t do this and just prescribes you "baytril", then you really need to find another vet pronto who is famialir with treating piggies. Baytril isnt brilliant against cervical lymphadenititis (if that's what they've got)

Whereabouts are you - we may be able to recommend a good cavy vet.

Sorry you are having to go through this and hoping your piggie recovers.

i live in wigan, close to bolton. not really too far from preston.
i dont mind having to travel as long as my little man can be made better

Thankyou so much for your help!

Hi, It's sounds like Rusty might have an abscess which the vet can usually drain by removing the puss but sometimes they have to be surgically removed, but I'm not a vet so you need to go to the vets for proper diagnosis and treatment. Also I'd just like to note that ringworm is completely unconnected to Rusty's lump :)

Healing Vibes for Rusty !
