Hi,

I've been cleaning out my piggies dora and pixie and I noticed dora has a runny nose and she's is sneezing a lot. It also sounds like she has a rattle when she breaths.

Both pixie and dora also have got blisters on the feet pads.

I'm so upset. I should have noticed earlier but I didn't.

I'm so worried I've been crying. Please can someone give me advice?

Thanks Jade x

Hi Jadey,

First off don't panic. It sounds to me like a respitry infection (URI) you can use a decongestant such as Vick. Olbas Oil can be used but only the smallest amount.

Sudafed can be given 0.2ml per day (an eighth of a human dosage.)

A hot water bottle in the cage covered in towelling and some hay on top. I would take to the vet in the morning it sounds as if antibiotics are needed. As for the feet it sounds like bubblefoot but without seeing snaps its hard to know.

Are they eating ok?

Good luck with them,

Louise

Thankyou so much I have a pic of dora feet but because I use my mobile for the internet I am unable to upload it, although I can send it by email.

I meant bumblefoot not bubble haha not having a good day with me spelling! :) To be honest I've not had it with my pigs can anyone else advise on the feet? :)

Thanks,

I'm wondering if the saw dust is bad for my piggies feet. I'm thinking of swapping to fleece.

I'm also a bit worried as I don't get paid untill the end of the month and I really can't afford to take them to the vets untill I do get paid. Do you think its ok for them to wait until 24th April or should I try get them there sooner.

They seem fine with eating ect but doras sneezes a lot.

No experience with bumblefoot.

Just wanted to give some sympathy - spring is such a deceptive time, not really cold, but not as warm as you'd think either! Easy to catch a cold for everypig!

I use Vicks to ease the breathing, but would check with a vet for the rattling.

Poor you, I feel for you, I discovered lice on my piggies yesterday, they are such a worry aren't they but don't cry and be brave xoxo

I would try to get them to the vet asap, not because it sounds serious but because piggies can go downhill quite fast and she may need antibiotics. Try the sudafed/ vicks first though and see how you get on. Watch her carefully for signs she is not eating- as you have been doing.

I'd also advise you getting rid of the sawdust/ woodshavings too, especially if you can't get to the vet. It isn't particularly good for their feet but it's even worse for their breathing. It is likely to be this kind of bedding which is causing your piggies' URI. x

I'm not sure but I would stop using the sawdust immediately as this is what is probaby affecting Dora runny nose and sneezing.

There are various other methods of bedding to use - see the Housing section for reviews on various different ones.

I personally use Megazorb - I have a layer of newspaper, a layer of Megazorb and then hay on top of that. Megazorb is really cheap and you get a massive bag - if you just have the 2 piggies then it will last a while.

Thankyou so so much.

I don't have any othe type of piggie bedding here at the mo, so could I use layers of news paper covered with old bed sheets untill I can get fleece?

Also what do I do with the vicks?

is it possible i could email someone the photos of the feet and they upload them to this thread please. I am unable to because i use my mobile for the internet.

Thanks

ive just been to check on my piggies again and doras nose was not runny it was dry. shes still eating and drinking lots and still has her sneeze.

I have removed all the sawdust from the cage and they now have fleece.

I'm really afraid that she is going to die. I wish i could take her to the vets now.

Also when i picked pixie up i noticed where she was sitting there are 2 patches of white stuff on the fleece. I dont know what it could be. They are about the size of a £1 coin? There was a piece of pop on top of one of the patchs. any ideas?

it was so hard to take them photos she kept trying to bite me so i had to get shaun lay her like that so she couldnt bite anyone.

shes so wriggly lol.

I just cant stop worrying about her. I have to leave the house in a min to go to work and its constantly going to be on my mind untill i can take her to vets.

Do you think it was cause by the sawdust?

Is this the start of something bad?

The sawdust wouldn't help but, in fairness to you, it would be impossible to say that it was the definite cause of the red feet.
Red front feet can indicate bumble foot. Bumble foot is very uncommon on the back feet. Some pigs get red feet for no apparent reason. Course of action? Wait and watch and don't worry.
