Yesterday hubby and I called into the local pet store just for a nosey, there were several guineas for sale, poor babies.
Please let us all spare a thought for these little ones who will be spending Christmas Eve and Day in a pet store cage.

Maybe we should also remember the ones that will have been bought as cheap Christmas presents, no doubt I'll be meeting a few in the New year...

Our local petshop has one rabbit in a small indoor cage and one male guineapig in a seperate cage - he's been in for ages and ages :( I asked the lady yesterday what she would do with them over Christmas and she said she'd be coming in to feed them as her house is full with her own rabbits and other furries. I felt so sorry for both of them, felt like handing over £20 (£12 for the bun and £8 for the pig) just to get them out, but of course I didn't :'(

I've made sure she knows my buns and some of my pigs are rescue ones so you never know, if she can't sell this male pig she might eventually give him to me. I'm trying to remember how long he's been in, it must be 5 months - he was originally in with another male one and he was sold and this one's stayed, but he's so big now I can't imagine how anyone's going to buy him when they can go to P@H and buy a cute baby

Merry Christmas to all those animals in pet shops globally. May the new year bring them the loving forever homes that they all deserve.

What a shame, poor little soul, it's a pity he wasn't handed into a good rescue instead.
It's a never ending cycle for many of the poor sows supplying the pet shops with babies...intentionally or unintentionally. It breaks my heart :'(

Ye he felt really skinny could feel all his bones. He sat on me for ages while I petted him

I'm sitting here thinking about the lil piggies in the nottingham pet shops that havent been loved this christmas, and I feel so damn sad now

I'm going to pop into the shop sometime tomorrow and see what guineas are left, if any...I won't of course be buying in any of them...
Maybe some were snapped up as last minute Christmas presents :(

I remember going into that shop one Christmas Eve and almost every living thing had been bought or had a sign on the cage..."Will collect Christmas Eve." A great time for an animal to be going to it's new home >:(
I think it would be a "a start" if pet shops would refrain from selling animals over the Christmas period. Maybe stop buying them in from the beginning of December?

Oh well, I can always dream, can't I ::)

My local one did a few days before Christmas - which made it very difficult for people to buy them as presents, at least for Christmas day. She also made a point of not selling if she knew they were for surprise presents i.e. she wanted the new owner to personally be there so she could talk to them first. I know people could lie but at least it is a step (if only a small one) in the right direction.

I don't on principle like pet shops but my local one is run by a family and as far as pet shops go - they are one of the better I have seen. I don't have any stores local to me that don't sell livestock so I do use this one to buy bits and pieces.

That's something isn't it, it's the first I've heard of it mind! It would be great if all pet shops did this...as you say, it's a small step in the right direction ;)

I always feel like this at Christmas. It's supposed to be such a happy time but I don't think it is for animals. Every year on Boxing Day I wonder about how pets that have been bought for presents are doing. I remember when 101 Dalmations was all the rage and reading in a paper about a Dalmation that had been dumped on Boxing Day. I think people often think they're buying a cheap present, compared with computer games etc; they don't think of the commitment or upkeep costs.

I drove past PAH last night and sent some nice warm loving vibes to the animals inside

On GMTV today it was saying that the Dogs Trust has launched its annual campaign against taking on a dog for the wrong reasons
It says that sometimes its the older dog that gets "dumped" to make way for a young "cute" puppy

How sad :'(

I just find this so hard to understand - are people tempted to that with their kids? I look at my 2 dogs, 1 is 7 and the other 9 and just love them so much, I sit and look at them when they're asleep for ages. I want to be there for them when they're old or ill - how can people just switch off like that?

I don't get it either..... I have a rabbit who is approaching 11 years old. I have had him since he was 8 weeks old. When I first got him he was so cute with perfect white fluffy fur and gorgeous blue eyes. He used to run around like a maniac and I could spend hours just watching him..... Now he looks a bit on the manky side ;D. His moults now a days make him look a bit like a shagpile carpet. He requires daily eye drops. For the first time ever I am incurring fairly hefty vet bills due to the eye problems and his arthritis. He no longer runs around much in fact most days he does very little so he is not as much 'fun' as he used to be. But would I change him? Never. He is much more affectionate now than he ever was and more importantly he is part of my family and I love him to pieces. I feel priviledged to have watched him grow up. I would never give up an animal just so I can go get a replacement.

I can not imagine myself ever giving up an animal but the only reason I can think of that would make me consider it would be if my health meant I could no longer care for them.

I know we are wandering off topic a bit now....but...

I remember when I was involved with general rescue, we took in several very old dogs. Two that spring to mind were ancient little terriers, one a Yorkie and one a Cairn, both were adopted by a friend. The Cairn had enormous mammary tumours that hung underneath her like a goats udder....and I do not exaggerate.
The Yorkie girl had a terrible heart murmur, mammary tumours and nails that curled into her pads. What these poor old abandoned girls went through while roaming the streets I just don't know...

My little old terrier passed at 17 and was loved until her last breath...still is.
If only it were the same for all animals. Something we can all only strive to see happen I suppose?
