Hi all,

I'm a new member here, I've got two guinea pigs and I've had them for 2 and a half years....but since the last few days one of my guinea pigs (male - his name is tuffs) has the following. It's a long post but please please bear with me.

- He hasn't been eating (normally he's fed lettuce, tomato, spinach and apples)
- He isn't drinking either, both g-piggies are very well looked after, regular vet visits and their cages and water are cleaned out multiple times a day.
- I'm feeding him water through a needle-less syringe just to try and make him drink something.
- He's just lying in the corner of his cage.
- Both of my guinea pigs eat the same dry food

I've took both fluffs and tuffs to the vet yesterday and he passed some urine, apparently his urine density is quite low.
The vet said he hasn't got long let, but I can't find a vet here who knows a lot of guinea pigs.....most vets in dubai cater to dogs and cats.

I'm literally begging any member to help me out.....I can't lose my guinea pig they both mean the world to me please help.
I'm tearing up just writing this....please help me......

With the right advice, your vet can hopefully still treat this.

In the meantime, you need to get some food into him.

The food that they eat - is it a pellet or is it a mix? If it's a pellet, you can make a pellet mash by putting some in a dish, soaking in a little hot water and allowing it to cool. You can then offer him this on a spoon.

If the food is a mix, it's a little bit more tricky to make a mash from, so you could try pureeing some vegetables and offering him this. At the moment, the most important thing is getting him eating.

Is he weeing and pooing normally?
 
Could he have eaten anything out of the ordinary, like any plants he shouldn't have?

Hopefully someone will be along soon to help. Is your vets willing to get advice from someone else? If so I'm wondering if you could get in touch with the CCT for advice.

I've not had personal experience of them though so can't offer a personal recommendation.

Amanada: It's a pellet, so I'm going to try and make a pellet mash out of it now and see how he does. He was weeing and pooing normally but since he stopped eating and drinking he's wee'd and poo'd very little.

Tillypop: Both tuffs and fluffs are kept indoor (dubai is really hot, even during our winter its 17 - 20 degrees during the day). They go out every day to play in the garden. We keep a watchful eye out for them in the garden in case they eat something. I'm pretty sure he didn't eat anything other than grass.

Here are more tips for hand feeding and caring for an ill piggy. You will need to try to get about 120ml of mushed pellets into him over the course of 24 hours. It works best in small, but frequent feeds, if necessary through the night. Expect a lot of the food to end on you! You could also try to syringe dioralyte or another rehydrating fluid from the pharmacy.

Really sorry to hear about little Tuffs :(
Another thing i'd be doing is making sure he is getting fluids..... even blitzing up some fruit so he's interested.
Offer him all his fav veggies even cutting them up small or into strips.

Wiebke: Thank you, I've emailed Laura. Thanks as well for the dosage of mashed pellets. I fed him a little bit, he ate about a tea-spoons worth of mashed pellets. I'm just about to step out out now to pick up syringe dioralyte.
