Hi everyone,

I bought this little hideout for floor time from the My Pet Shelters stand at a charity event in Kidsgrove, and Noa and the piggies seem to really love it.

Noa was actually napping in it before bedtime last night, but when I picked him up afterwards, I noticed he smelled quite strongly of plywood/wood. It made me wonder whether the material is definitely safe for guinea pigs, especially if they spend time sleeping inside it or potentially chewing it.

I’ve messaged the seller to ask what type of wood it’s made from, but I thought I’d ask here too in case anyone has experience with this kind of hideout or with wooden/plywood hides.

Would you use it for floor time only, or avoid it until I know exactly what wood/material it is?

Thank you! 🙏

Hi.
I can not see any photo of the hideys, please could you repost it?
I am based in UK and my piggies have wooden hideys from Hop Inn and they love them. I have seen other people with wooden hideys here, like Sarah on the Squeak Dreams youTube channel, she is also based in UK, so I guess there are safe brands and safe woods out there, but you are maybe right to be cautious if you do not know about that particular hidey. Hopefully someone more experienced may identify it for you. Good luck.

I’ve bought wooden hides & castles from that seller & never had any issue. If the piggies pee against the wood or pile their poop up against the sides or corners you do have to give it a good scrub. Some people choose to paint them with Pet friendly paint to help stop pee and poop seeping into the wood.

Hello, here is a pic of the hideout. All my piggies absolutely love it and spend much time in it. They haven’t been chewing on it, and those rare occasions they do, we just distract them and they stop. Still waiting to hear from the seller to see what type of wood this is :)

I bought them already painted with pet friendly paint, so they are pretty easy to clean and look very stylish as well.

Oh that’s a relief! And good to know! We put a little blanket under it so for now they seem to be staying away from the corners of the hideout and just chill on the blanket (which we do have to clean up frequently as you can imagine 👀💩

Now I can see it, thanks.
Nope, that is not the one that we have, so I have no idea. But it seems cute. I hope that someone else will know this one.

Hi, I’ve used this hideout for a few years with no issues despite them chewing on it.It eventually got too dirty so I’ve re-purposed it as a food shelter for my hedgehog visitor! I used to sand them occasionally to get rid of any marks.

Thank you for sharing, the piggies will be so happy!

Sorry to resurrect the thread a bit, but looking for paint as I need to get a new hide! I have used to cuprinol garden shades in the past? Would this be ok still?

Sorry, I have no idea. I hope that someone else may be able to help you.

Cuprinol Garden Shades is absolutely fine.

I've had wooden hides in the past that have smelt of fresh cut wood, it has soon aired off. I put them outside or if wet weather in the greenhouse for a few days.

We love the Hop In Hides.
