Hiya i really need some advice

Poc gave birth 2 days ago to 4 lovely babies. 1 has sadly passed away. The other 3 have lost 8-11g's each over the period of 2 days. They will eat solids if mum is not around but will not when mum is in the cage. Poc is only lactating out of one nipple.

She has seemed a bit depressed since the baby died in the early hours but apparently i have been told a death of a baby doesn't have much affect on the mum. I have checked for womb infection (discharge) and there is none and her bits look fine. Her 2 nipples are both erect. One looks a bit sore and there is no milk coming out. The other is pink and only little milk is coming out.

She ate 3 out of 4 after births and mum and baby were fine until the one died. She won't really eat anything either which is strange for her.

When i called the Vets this morning about the baby dying- i asked if i could bring them all in to be checked on for problems (this is before i knew about the weight loss) and they said no as it will do more harm than good. They are now closed.

I tried lactol off a spoon and from a teat off a bottle suitable for guineas and they wouldn't take it, i tried mashed down nuggets and they maybe had 3 mouthfuls and stopped. I gave poc some fresh veggies twice today and shes not eatting them. maybe one mouthful and stops.

I don't know what to do with them- do i separate them all, put the babies in with Snowdrop who gave birth 6 weeks ago and still has erect nipples (even though snowdrop has been known to attack other guineas apart from her own babies) or do i let nature take its course.

Please help me and my guinea pigs x

Give her plenty of green veg to get her milk flowing. Babies do loose weight in the first few days. They will eat solids if mums not around because they're hungry. Have Poc out on your lap and feed each baby in turn to make sure they're at least getting something.

Just an update- all the babies still alive this morning but mum has now got yellow stringy discharge coming from her vagina :( found a vet thats open sundays and i'm taking her in in an hour :(

Initial weight loss is not uncommon in pups, but I can fully understand why you are so worried after losing one of your pups.

Vibes for mummy!
