polydactyl pigs(extra toes)

i had a very inbred family arrive here a while ago and they have all got extra toes.when little hailey was born i removed one of hers and it was fine but the others are fsr too big for this i want to take them to get removed at the vets but just wondering has anyone had this done and what was the outcome/ ie should i just leave them polydactyl/ they are only joined by small strings not bones or anything.they dangle and I'm worried they would get caught up in the wire or just be irritating.thanks

Contact Boureki (Julie) she has Boomer who had his removed. He was my foster pig. It never caused him any trouble but just looked like it could be ripped off if he caught it.

I would always remove just incase. :)

Hiya, yes, Louise is right - Boomer had an extra toe that sounds exactly like your pigs' toes. We decided to get it removed for the reasons she said above, but also because we just caught the quick when nail clipping it and because of the restricted blood flow, the nail died off and the tissue on the end started to go black. As it was dangling on a string, my vet did it there and then in the consultation - she put some "freezecream" on it it which basically numbed the area, waited about 10 mins or so and I think she literally just snipped it off and then put some surgical glue on it. It initially looked a heck of a lot worse than it did when we went in, but as soon as the glue disappeared, you would never know he had ever had an extra digit - it just looks like a slightly bald tiny nubbin. Hopefully most competent vets should be able to do this. No general anaesthetic was needed for this.

I haven't had hers removed and it's fine... but it did worry me that it might get caught in something. I've left hers for now as it's not causing problems but I think it depends on the pig - some are more dangly than others!

one of them has two that fold under her foot as she is about 3yrs old and it must hurt her I think.the vet I go to wanted to put a small ligature on it and let it fall off.Ithought this may hurt so would rather have it snipped with a local or similar.
