My babies are outside and, while they have an insulated hutch cover and polystyrene tiles pinned to the outside of their hutch*, I was thinking that I would like to give them something warm to sit on. What does anyone think of slipping a couple of tiles under their newspaper? I could change them when they get mingy (B&Q is just across the road).

Any thoughts, anyone?

I would have thought a thick wad of newspaper would do much the same job, under the bedding?

Also cardboard boxes in their beds to another layer of insulation is good, upside down though so it doesn't get soaked in pee

You can buy snugglesafe pads which you heat up in the microwave and they stay warm all night - I haven't tried these but I know others on here use them

Thanks Sophie

Can't do snuggle cups, as I don't have a microwave and the pads might not take kindly to being boiled!

Paper they already get, but it holds water and can get cold, I really want something waterproof to go under the paper and provide some insulation.

I've never used it, but there's some kind of bedding they use for kittens and puppies which I believe doesn't retain water. I just googled, and it's vetbed -
  • Very long lasting – customers tell us Vetbed® last and lasts
  • Machine washable – over and over again at up to 90ºC
  • Thicker pile – for greater heat retention
  • Double woven – makes it harder to chew
  • Portable – use it at home or when travelling
  • Hygienic – non irritant and non-allergic
  • Recommended by vets – the beds they use the most
  • Drains and dries fast – keeps your pets warm and dry even if accidents happen

Vetbed is used by lot of people on here and I would say this was your best bet.

It draws liquid away from the top of the fleece, so a thick layer layer of newspaper underneath will keep it dry.

You can buy it online, on ebay or various pet shops, just search vet bed.
