What does it mean when guinea pigs pooh looks like tiny sausages on a string? i know it sounds crazy but hes ill and i dont know what it could mean. thanx x
I've experienced this many times, the most recent of which was only a couple of days ago. In my experience, it happens to guinea pigs who have lost appetite, but are being fed on critical care. Until Bertie started eating larger quantities of hay two days ago, his pooh was like that. The vet always said as long as he's passing some stools then all the better. I think it just means the gut is working, but not at full capacity because the guinea pig does not have a normal appetite.
It happens frequently after bouts of not eating. Instead of normal, larger poops forming with good food intake, much smaller ones form with the smaller bits of food that are 'input' and don't seem to stick together so well; they tend to be joined together by a string of gel-type gloop. ('Scuse the grossness!)
A "hiccup" in the digestion, often a side-effect of a period of not eating - though it can be caused by other digestive upsets - tends to be to blame, and it does need addressing. Probiotics and - if not eating - frequent syringe-feeds usually set things back on the right track. Is your pig on antibiotics at all?
Thanks for the replys I'm just so sad today i dont know what to do. He had an xray yesterday and by the sound of the vet on the phone he was supposed to be making progress, he was sedated and catheterized if i had of known that this was going to happen i wouldnt of put him through this, when i left him there at the vets he was his chirpy old self. But now hes not passing urine and his stools where like tiny sausages last night, but today he looks like hes critical. I had to clean his bum as his pooh was sticking to him and it was a fowl smell. I blamed the sedation last night thinking he was just drowsy but hes the same again today. I'm thinking of stopping the metacam as he does not look in pain and hes not making any noise. i had to syringe feed him cucumber today as he wont chew he just lays there with food hanging out of his mouth. Does not look good guys i just have to keep praying. He hasnt left my side all day x
I was under the impression that poos that look like stringed sausages was a sign of dehydration. Maybe he's not getting enough fluids especially if he's off his food.
I would stop the Metacam as if he's dehydrated already, it may affect his kidneys.
I hope your piggy recovers soon. will be thinking of him xx>>>
Chances are he's poorly because he's dehydrated due to not eating or drinking.
I wonder if his kidneys are ok. If he was dehydrated before the x-ray, and was not eating or drinking afterwards, there's a chance his kidneys have been affected. You can check for signs of renal failure and the way to do this is to hold piggy up to ears and shake him. If you can hear a sloshing noise, it means that there is free fluid in the abdomen which is not a good sign. This will need veterinary attention.
It may be worth texting Vedra at the CCT for some advice.
He had xray because he was bleeding from his "penis" they kept him over night for urine sample, this didnt work as it was mainly blood and no urine. So they said xray, they catheterised him flushed his bladder and said he didnt have stones ect they said it could be cystitus. I dont want to harp on about the price but they charged me £92 wowsers lol. Ive head about vedra one of my friends recomended her how can i get in touch. Thanks for the advice i will check him, vets said if he doesnt pass urine take him back in the morning.
The description you give is absolutely diagnostic of dehydration. It is vital that you get fluid into him, preferably rehydration fluid, eg Dioralyte.
If the kidneys are not passing sufficient fluid they will shut down, an irreversible condition. He could have heart failure. If the heart is not pumping at a high enough pressure then kidney function is impaired.
I have taken pigs down to Vedra at one o'clock in the morning before now, at her suggestion!
Thanks hun but Eddie passed away this evening! i was with him all the way i spoke to vedra and she told me the same thankyou for all your support. A very sad couple of days, hes at rest now bless him x
