Ive began noticing that for just less than a week, my Guinea pig, Little, isn't pooing as frequently as he should be. I felt his tummy today and it put him in a little discomfort, I gently squeezed the sides a little then after about a minute he pooed but that was only the second in around four hours. I use Little's poo to make poop soup as a probiotic for my other pig, Honey, who's currently on antibiotics and has been over two weeks. Vet bills are getting expensive and Honey might be needing an X-ray which is even more money so I only want to take Little to the vets if it's absolutely necessary. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also would it still be okay to give Little's poos to Honey? He wouldn't even go near the probiotic we bought.

Hi,

How old is Little and how long have you had him? What is Honey being treated for?

Do you weigh him? A gradual reduction in poo output could be caused by a lack of food going in. This would cause a drop in weight, which would warrant a vet trip to find out the cause.

Try gently tapping on the sides of his abdomen- does it sound hollow to tap? If so, he may have ongoing bloating issues which will warrant a vet visit, particularly if poos stop all together- this would be an emergency.

The other option is Honey may be eating his poos, if her guts are a little upset from the antibiotics. If this is the case id suggest persevering with the probiotic. Adding a little water to powdered probiotic, drawing it up in a syringe (without the needle Ofcourse) and administering into the side of the mouth is usually the best way.

Hope you get to the root of the cause soon x

I have had both of them for two years so I assume Little is two and a half years old, Honey is currently being treated for URI. I haven't weighed him actually but I will start now, he appears to be eating just as much as always, I had thought bloat but it doesn't sound hallow so I don't think it is that. I think I will try syringing the probiotic in Honeys mouth, thank you for your help :)
