So my sow with ovarian cysts is due for ultrasound, cysts drained and first HCG injection tomorrow. But for the past 4/5 days she has teardrop shaped poos, and not alot of them in general. Shes eating ALOT of them straight from her bottom which i noticed when having her out for a cuddle. Still eating and drinking fine, no change in diet. Iv tried with or without veg, and shes on probiotics but no change. Looking a little sorry for herseld but clinically okay. Heres the weird part.. The poos feel like they have air in them! When i gently squeeze them, the sides are almost like a turgid balloon! Its only when they give in and have an opening in them, that they turn into flat pancakes! Any ideas? Will obviously mention to vet tomorrow.

seems to be a sign of a struggling digestive system, usually due to illness. i've seen these ones with mollie on occasion and with eddie when he wasn't well. the air is from the gases and that builds up when the system is slowed down or the pig isn't able to use the nutrients properly from food. this will be why she feels she needs to eat them directly aswell. has she been following her cage mate/s round trying to eat from them aswell? the teardrop shape can be dehydration aswell i think.

i found avipro plus to make some difference. it's a prebiotic so not sure if this is why? probiotics aren't proven to work but they do no harm. maybe prebiotic is better? not sure but i think avipro plus does seem to help. it did with eddie anyway and it seems to with mollie aswell.

ovarian cysts can be an immunosuppressant our vet said when maisie had them. they can also cause discomfort and pain so this could also be why the digestion system is under a bit of strain.

good luck for tomorrow :)

Could be a few things , but my mony,s on upset tummy , poss malabsobtion dew to the meds

Thanks for your reply. I'm hoping its just down to her cysts but I'm now worried this is a seperate problem and may be overlooked by the vet due to her current condition. Its just not like her. I had a batch of hay from pets at home, timothy hay, and it smelled a bit damp. It ended up giving my other sow diahorrea and now a week later crunchie has this. I'm worried its caused some sort of infection and its the last thing she needs.
My other sow was recently diagnosed with renal disease and I'm so stressed with it all- everytime something else happens my heart just sinks!

I agree there is some kind of digestive upset and she may be a bit gassy. Gripe water can help so maybe mention it when you see the vet in the morning. Gentle massage/vibration can also be effective. Ovarian cysts can encroach on other organs and the digestive system is often affected. This happened to my Millie. We were treating recurring gassy episodes but they subsided when her cysts had gone.

Shes on fibreplex twice daily.. 4 days down the line and no change.

I recommend gripe water, it was a godsend for BonBon. Keep up with the fibre plex as well. I've been giving BonBon both twice a day, and they're finally working on her droppings. The important thing is easing her discomfort in her stomach which in turn will get her eating properly again as she starts to feel better, then the droppings start to firm up again. I also noticed a change weight wise that the combo is working.

silly question , but she is drinking ? is the water going down as much as you would expect it to ?

sorry to hijak this thread , but l have no other way of finding out

Admin , when will l get enough privetages to post a threand of my own

You know what? I rarely see BonBon at the water bottle, but she must be getting enough from her food. Before she was this started, she was always on the bottle. But to look at her, she's obviously hydrated enough.
If your piggy has never been one to hang around the water bottle, it's hard to gage whether they're getting enough, I think if they're dehydrated, the weight drops off quicker than when they stop eating, as even we as humans are mostly made up of the stuff.
Getting the balance of veg that contains a high enough water content to help encourage a Guinea pig to take in more water, and encourage them to eat more is a fine art, trying to avoid soft stools at the same time. Gripe water, dissipates the gas build up within the pig's stomach, which has been giving the piggy the impression that they are full, when really they're not. The gas in turn makes the stomach produce more acid than it needs, to break down what it thinks is food, irritating the stomach lining, increasing the risk of ulcers. The grip water i've been using works in two ways, it removes the gas bubbles, and neutralises the acid, and it also acts as a anti-inflammatory from the throat to the entire gut system, giving the piggy much needed relief from discomfort. (Can't you see i've been studying it).
With BonBon I think she's been suffering ulcers through stress (back when she lost two pals within weeks of each other) and had been in gradual decline over 17 months, her decline has ceases, and she's now levelled out and starting to improve, but it's been a long haul.

I'm going to report your thread, not in order to imply that you have done anything wrong, but in order to bring it to the mods attention more easily (in case this post gets buried and is left un-noticed) for you so that they can get to the bottom as to why you're having trouble creating your own thread. :) So it's a 'report' with friendly intentions, if that makes sense?
I hope it will be sorted out for you :) x

thaks for that, some times forams lose sight of the prime directive
piggys first polertics second

She isnt much of a drinker, infact rarely touches the bottle. Shes always been the same though. She eats mostly veg and timothy hay, she never really eats alot of pellets as has veg throughout the day. I tried her 2 days off veg but no change. She had her scan and injections today (will update other thread) and has started pooping more. Still not completely normal poos but less of a teardrop shape and not as "air filled". Vet says she would expext this gut slowdown due to her cysts and feeling down.
