Hi Fellow Piggie Lovers,

I have noticed a few times now that one of my sows has been having very odd, sticky and wet poops. I know its her. She is quite a bit larger than her sister Margo. I have added a photo of what i found today when i cleaned their cage. The poops are always in a cluster at the back of their wood log houses.
Agnes (all black) weighs about 3.1lbs and Margo (black and white) weighs about 2.3lbs. I am concerned as it doesnt look normal. It does smell unpleasant as well. They always have fresh hay to eat and get veggies twice in 7 days.

Thank you x

Hi

No not normal at all. Could be a few things there happening

It is not Diaherra so that is good but that is not normal for poo and is quite wet.

Normally with wet poo it is suggested to take of veg and feed lots of hay to firm it up so adding more fibre into their diet. You can use a supplement call fibre plex. You need to see how the poo is coming out as it could be she has sat a wee'd on lots of poo and they have clumped together - but this is an outside bet. Seeing what the pellets are like as they come out is a must to help diagnose. Can you bring her indoors in a run and feed and see?

If it is coming out like this then she needs to see a vet to go over various causes, the more info you have to give the vet the more chance they have a making a clear diagnosis. Wet poo can mean several things - upset tummy, too much wet food or possibly the gut returning to normal after a period of bloat which is not good and will need medication.

They look somewhat off. Please take her off any fresh food for the time being. See a vet tomorrow, if you can, or as an emergency over the weekend if the poos don't normalise again within 24 hours and there is a further deterioration/weight loss/loss of appetite.

Switch from weighing weekly to weighing daily at the same time in the feeding cycle (ideally either before or after dinner). Step in with syringe feeding if your girl is losing 50g/2 oz from one day to the next.
Complete Syringe Feeding Guide (including info for fibreplex and probiotics)

If you or your vet have fibreplex handy, please give that, if not, give a pinch of probiotics twice daily (the latter you can get from a pet shop in an emergency). Poo soup made from soaking fresh poos from a healthy piggy in a little bit of water and syringing that can also help to re-stock the guts with exactly the right stuff. It mimics natural behaviour.

hey..

hey.. my two are indoor piggies. Its too cold in Kent to have them outside and we have too many cats and foxes that visit too. I will keep an eye on what Agnes's poops come out like. I did wonder that i might have to take her to see a vet just to make sure. thank you x
