How I wish I'd known about this forum last year.
Our two boys, Bill and Ben, suddenly started fighting when they got to 6 months old, having lived happily for 3 months. Folowing the vets advice, we had Ben neutered. Sadly it didn't stop the fighting so the boys live separately, within sight and sound of each other but not able to hurt one another.
About 2 months after the op, Ben developed a serious abscess on the wound site and our vet prescribed Baytril. As the abscess improved Ben stopped eating and became very ill. Thankfully we consulted a new vet who put Ben on a probiotic and thankfully, he got back to normal.
So what has happened this morning? A new abscess on the opposite side has developed and burst! Have seen our new vet who seems to be excellent and we start another regime of Baytril and Hibiscrub washes, this time alongside a course of probiotics.
I was just wondering if anyone had any experience of this sort of thing and any good ideas to help ensure Ben doesn't deteriorate again. He is such a lovely lad, with a little cleft palate, and we all adore him. It's so awful that he has to go through this all over again.

Sorry, I don't know what to suggest for your boy. You might get a better response if you post in the health and illness section. Best piggy wishes to Benny. x

Neutering does not alter a pigs behaviour I'm afraid, but that does mean you can get him a girly friend. Perhaps get your other boar netured and do the same ( after4 weeks i think)

Do you have hard hay or straw? this may be down to poke injurys becomeing infected.

Sadly, abscesses can happen even months after neutering. It is the most common complication after the op.

This time, you can put him on probiotics from the start, so hopefully, his appetite will not suffer. Try to keep the abscess open for as long as possible in order to keep new pockets from developing.

I am sorry about your problems.

But as popcorn paradise has pointed out - you can pair him with a sow as companion if you wish to. Cross gender pairings are the most stable and Ben will be in boy's Heaven!
