One of my new piggies is very poorly, i came home yesterday from work and found her looking very weak and with blood coming from her bottom, she had upset tummy too. she isnt walking properly and seems to just hop along if she can be bothered. ive took her to the vet and he just said he doenst know what is wrong and gave her antibiotics but she doesnt seem any better, think i should go bk tomoro.

Anyone else had a similar problem?

It could be one of either a bladder, digestive or reproductive problem. I am sorry the vet was so useless, nothing worse than finding this out when you really need one!

Is she eating? Make sure she gets plenty of fluids down her and syringe-feed if she's not eating for herself.

Are you able to travel? The CCT is near Huntingdon, Cambs - it may be worth seeing if Vedra will see Brillo if you can travel this way.

Bleeding from the anus can come from the guts, the womb or the urinary tract/kidneys (although that last one is more often mixed with urine).

Sadly, I can't help you any more than sending you and poorly Brillo my vibes!

cant really travel that far :( she is just cuddling up to her pals and not overly interested in her food, she is still drinking tho.

will take her bk tomoro i think, what can i give her food wise? she eats pellet food and she just isnt very interested

Will she eat any of her favourite veggies? Do you feel she's in pain at all? Is she still bleeding now, or has this symptom stopped - what antibiotics did the vet give you?

I know it's a lot of questions, don't feel I'm cross-examining you...more like the pig as best I can! :)

At the moment I am wondering about a digestive problem/gut infection, given the upset tummy (diarrhoea?) and the blood. The walking problems are likely down to weakness and possibly pain. The important thing is to get plenty of fluids down her, Dioralyte preferably as it will help replace the salts/electrolytes lost, and also syringe-feeds.

0.2ml children's Nurofen or Calpol (or Rimadyl or Metacam if you have either in the house, different doses though) will help with the pain.

poor Brillo, she doesn't sound well at all, is there a different vet you could take her to? Its always worth getting a second opinion.
Sending get well vibes xx

Not tried veggies, dont think she is in pain doesnt really moan about being handled just very weak. didnt notice any blood earlier but still messy. baytril.

calpol- is 0.2ml ok for any age? and which calpol? baby one?

Good that she's not bleeding any more. How old is Brillo?

The correct Calpol is the infant one (not the 6+).

we dont know for definate but we got her from p&h on 3/2/10 but i *** know how old they r when they r sold?

Age does vary when they're sold, most commonly anywhere from 6-12 weeks but some are there for quite a long time. How much does she weigh?

erm i *** know for sure but when the vet weighed her it said 0.78 which I'm guessing means 78grams?

0.78 will be in kilos, so 780g. She's a good weight, but probably still under 5-6 months. If you do decide to give pain relief, it's better to do so at a reduced dose, so instead give 0.1ml.

My apologies for not checking on her age before giving the dosing advice.

What funny anatomy!! Blood from the anus can only come from the digestive tract
so it says in the books what i have read.

Hmmm... sounding a bit familiar... I'm definitely going to bed.

Calpol/Nurofen can be given up to twice a day, lily n dori. I hope Brillo has improved this morning. :)
